    Hi there,

Hoping someone can help me out with some advice. Currently looking at buying a 2010 VW Golf 1.4 Petrol 160 BHP.

Would anyone know if this engine is any good, or does it give many problems? I’m also open to other makes and models?

Looking to buy a small engine Petrol car that gives out high BHP but can also get good mpg if driven sensibly. (If there’s such a thing) 🀔

    Thanks in advance.

They have a reputation of being troublesome.

Is there a reason for wanting a smaller capacity engine?

Most of my driving is city driving, so thought maybe the smaller engine would be best.

And something that was a bit of fun to drive.

I had a 2008 Passat 1.4 120HP and I now have a 151 Passat 1.4 120HP. I haven't had problems with either and the turbo was great fun - and it would be even better with the 160HP on the lighter Golf.

I had heard in the past that the 1.4 tsi 122bhp engine was less problematic then the 160bhp version. But would rather the 160 just to have more poke. How do you find the mpg on the Passat?

We do a mix of short city driving and long distance to relatives. Average is 39.23mpg (I keep records of each fill).
Best ever was 51.62mpg and worst was 32.74mpg.

That’s pretty good for a petrol. Thanks for the feedback. Will do a bit more investigation before I purchase anything.

The previous 170bhp version of that engine gave a fair amount of trouble so not sure how reliable it got with the 160bhp version. 160bhp will be wasted doing mostly city driving though.

    Excellent performance, horrible reliability.

You should not look at power output, but generation. EA211 is a much much better engine that earlier EA111.

Would you have any other recommendations for city driving? Diesel isn’t an option due to dpf issues! But am all ears for other suggestions!
    Thanks

Would you be open to a hybrid?

You would get a Lexus CT200h/Toyota Auris/Prius on your budget. They are suited to city driving and seldom give any trouble.

I’ve never really given them a thought to be honest. Probably not tho, as I’d like something with a bit of power and fun to drive.

Will do a bit more research before I purchase anything. Thanks for feedback.

Cannot see you getting much fun or power driving around town, unless you live in Monaco.

Ah come on now m8, you here long enough to Not sound like one of those people who say "why do you need fast car if a speed limit is still only 100km/h" :pac:

Op, the early 1.4tsi turbo/super charged engines were a nightmare. I personally would stay away from it.
Unfortunately your budget puts you in to segment of cars, where diesels are the only option, unless you can pick up a Golf gti. Tax will be higher, mpg lower, but a lot better car.
Another option could be Alfa Giuletta.

Thanks for the honesty regarding the Golf petrol. I’d have no issues picking up a diesel, but the last diesel I had was a 09 Golf Tdi and was shocking on fuel for a diesel. It kept regenerating itself as I wasn’t doing the motorway miles, which contributed to the bad fuel economy.

If you can think of a diesel that doesn’t have this dpf issues then I’m all ears!! As for the Alfa, do they not still have an awful reputation?

    145/146 were horrible.
147/156 were okish, weak suspention elements
159/Mito were relatively good if you know what to avoid
    Giulietta is actually very good.

    Food for thought, thanks!

And I think you are here long enough to know what I really mean too. :)

I'm all for buying the car you want but a Prius or Gti being driven mostly around town will do the same thing - start, go, queue, stop, park. You won't even get a chance to clear the throat of the GTi stuck in traffic and the novelty of the occasional traffic light Grand Prix will wear off fairly quickly. Just seems a waste buying a car the OP sounds like won't get an opportunity to use. For fun you would need a car which you take outside the city and given spirited runs. If your not doing that then again what's the point?

One way or another, you should stay away from diesel. Its not suitable for you. In city driving you wont see the benefits of mpg anyway, but you will be stuck with diesel running costs.

Alfa 159/Guiletta are very decent cars and dont have any extra issues that others cars would. Reputation unfortunately still goes a long.

    Something like this?
