I have a case of the immaculate conception on 3 of my heifers and i was just wondering what's the story with tagging the calves do I have to send off the Bvd sample or is it optional, also how do I go about drying off the cows? Might leave the calves on them for a while anyway...Tia

Sending off the BVD sample is compulsory anyway, you wont be able to sell the calves unless theyre BVD tested negative.
You need to sell them under 42 days old or youll have to TB test them also.

I'll be keeping them anyway but my next test is not due to march so do I have to get the vet out to test again?

Also I'm trying to register the calves on agfood and on the first section is asking me out in animal number? Do I just put one?

Hold your horses there now. have you got tags to put in the calves ears yet? That's the number they're looking for, the last 5 digits of the tag.

If you're keeping them on you don't have to test them, only in your usual herd test next unless you want to sell them as weanlings.

Maybe you could bring your annual herd test forward but im not sure.

Animal number is the calf tag number.
Leave out the IE bit i think.

Sorry I'm at a total loss here, do I buy the tags first and then register them on agfood?

I'll be finishing them so no bother there

You might be safer sell them as springers privately.😜

I'd recommend buying tags first as they can take a while to arrive. You might get yourself into bother if you're stuck waiting on them as the tags have to go back within 28 days of registering. So order your tags- Try registering here- https://tags.mullinahonecoop.ie/ots/spring/main?execution=e1s1 and you can order them today, should be out in 2-3 weeks or so.

https://tags.mullinahonecoop.ie/ots/pdf/NewTagOrderForm.pdf is the postal version if you're so inclined.

There's also Cormac tags but I don't use them so can't say much about them.

You can always backdate the calves to their actual birthdate when the tags arrive or anytime around then. Few days makes little difference.

Drying off the heifers, well we never use anything here, just remove the calves but as heifers are probably being fed you might need to reduce their feeding to help dry them up. Straw/hay is good for this.

If your in a rush to get the tags order them from cormac, their service puts mullinahone to shame.

Faster, cheaper and you can speak to an actual person on the phone. I changed supplier this year and will not be going back to mullinahone.

Just be careful that you have access to a cormac tagger as they are a different system to the others. No point buying one for 3 tags only.

And remember when you register the calves, the mothers become cows and possibly get a lower price in the factory.:(

    Thanks for the replies.

I know getting the cow price is a killer although I've heard of lads selling cow heifers in the mart

I'm sure there's many a cow had twins without her knowing it!

Finally got the tags and have the samples ready to go.
Can anyone tell me which lab to send it to and is there a payment needed?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 512 ✭✭✭anthony500_1

I use enfer labs in Kildare, think it's 2.50 or 2.80 per sample for bvd. And another 1.80 to post them, up to 10 samples They have to be pre paid for and you can do it over the phone and a debit card. Then when sending the sample just put them in a zip lock bag with your contact details phones no, herd number, tag no, how many tags. And they will text you out then when sample is tested if your clear or not

The full postal address is: Enfer, M7 Business Park, Naas, Co Kildare
Tel: 045 983800 - you can make payment over the phone or as I do, stick a cheque in with the samples.

Put EXEMPT ANIMAL SAMPLE on the top of the envelope as well, it stops it going through machine that may damage the envelope

You can select from a number of labs in Ireland. We use " Animal Health Labs "at Shinagh House Bandon CO Cork. A credit card number does the trick for payment.

How much are they out of interest per sample

    ink

Think cost is circa 1.50 / 1. 80 per sample.
It's paid thru co-op account which is less paperwork.
