Imagine if this was an Irish person talking about African Americans:

I'll give him the small gene pool comment, but most of his comments are probably passed on one certain UFC fighter, who needs no mention.

What? Describing them as red-headed with freckles? Imagine.

Would it be ok if I don't click on the link or find out who the guy is and skip straight to the outrage?

What? Describing them as red-headed with freckles? Imagine.

    And retarded.

But there's no need to be pedantic though. I think you knew what I was saying but in case you didn't and for the sake of clarity, I'll explain it to you in finer detail:

If a known Irish person labelled African Americans as retarded looking, talked about their gene pool and said they all looked the same - there would be outrage and their career would be finished.

There's double standards, don't you agree?

Talking about the Irish like that isn't as loaded.

One thing isn't the same as the other thing.

When you consider the reaction when Trump called some countries ****holes, this seems worse.

Lee might not be a superstar but he's well known in the sport.

We should all be hugely offended about the musings of some meathead American UFC fighter who probably has trouble with basic arithmetic.

UFC is so silly and forced. You can just see their increasingly desperate marketing department concocting this in an attempt to gain some publicity for their boring product.

A man in a sport where self promotion is a huge part in how far you go in said sport says something people don't like in an attempt to rile them up and hopefully tune in to see him get beat up in a fight that could possibly involve someone from the country he was disparaging.

More on this developing story at 11.......

What? A UFC said something stupid and headline grabbing?

Next you'll be telling me the sky is blue.

Cos it's stupid, that's why. If a known Irish UFC fighter said something stupid and racist, it is highly unlikely that their career would be finished.

Yeah you're right. I can see loads of people in this country - with a population of 4 million -subscribing to BT Sports and staying up until 3am hoping to see Lee get his face smashed in.
Or as someone said above, the UFC marketing team came up with the whole thing. Guess we'll never know.

Ill forgive him if they bring Hulk Hogan back.

Don't be silly. If Conor McGregor used racist or homophobic language, his career would be over in a flash!

    Oh wait, what's this? https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2017/jul/15/mayweather-accuses-mcgregor-of-racism-and-uses-homophobic-slur

BECAUSE it's stupid. And disagree. If McGregor spouted racist rhetoric of a similar nature, he'd have serious problems.

The homophobic stuff he got hammered for recently wasn't even directed at the gay community. If he openly said something similar and directed it at the black community the way Lee's comments here are pointed at Irish people, he'd definitely be finished.

And that's taking into account that McGregor is a much more valued cash cow to the UFC than Lee is.

Or the tens of millions of people who identify as Irish American in the States? Just a thought? If you've watched any Kevin Lee interview for even a minute you'd know the marketing team didn't script this. He's probably one of the best on the mic in the company.

Maybe it's time to start talking about the image of Irish people that Conor McGregor is portraying on the worldwide stage?

    Struggling to summon the outrage.

Conor McGregor could call Denis Siver a Nazi and throw a trolley through a bus window and his career wouldn't be finished because he's The UFC's biggest draw. Could he survive racially abusing black people? Probably not. Now, what's stupid about that?

I was being sarcastic with the marketing comment. Fair point on the ancestry, never even thought about that!

I'm not sure I understand the apathy from some posters here - the OP makes a very valid point; if I stated in a public forum that I thought that African Americans were retarded and inbred I would be slaughtered, and rightly so

So why is it "not a big deal" when an African American says it about Irish people? I couldn't give a flying f*ck if he was promoting a fight, a book release or just making a random Facebook post, what he said was racist and he should be punished for it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,048 ✭✭✭Bunny Colvin

It's not even apathy. It's more of a case of showing how much you're not offended and being smarmy at the same time. Real apathy would be not to comment at all.

Well, you'll be getting no cuddles because the big fighty man in the UFC offended you, sorry.

I've never in my life been offended over what someone I don't know said. However, I think Lee should be called out on it and for it to be highlighted.

I read it on r/mma and I said I'd post it here because it's an Irish forum. Most of the users on Reddit are American and the majority said his comments were unacceptable. Not here though, instead a lot of comments seem to be having a go at anyone who could possibly be offended over it rather than what Lee said - which is strange.

Didn’t look at the link, whatever he said, I couldn’t give a flying fanny really.
It is funny the way all the resident lefties are telling people not to be so sensitive though :pac:

He's been fishing for a fight against Conor for a long time now, ever fighter does it.
It's the fight that guarantees folk enough money to retire on.

I like Lee though, and I am genuinely annoyed at the BS he spouted in that interview if I'm honest.

Even funnier how Boards' resident 'that's not racist' brigade have suddenly come over all 'triggered' because the perpetrator of the racism is black.

From what I heard he said nothing racist. If he was singling out Asian-Irish people you might have a point. Irish people are always calling Americans fat and loud, is that racist?
