Volvo s40, new engine?

    Heya folks,
Having been in and out of the garage giving me random trouble for the last few months, my 07 Volvo s40 diesel engine has just died - garage are trying to source a new engine, but I'm just trying to suss out my options from a sensible source rather than relying on my sentimentality toward it!

So, from the most basic point of view, I assume that a new engine will solve all previous engine problems, however, from a financial p.o.v., is it worth my while spending probably close to 2k on a new engine and just driving it for another few years til it stops again? (the body/underside of the car is in great nick)

Or should I be looking at putting that money into another car altogether? At the moment, I'd have a budget of about €750 for another car, increasing to about €1400 mid-May, and close to 2k in mid-june, if I don't buy anything else. (and live on bread and cheese til then :pac:.) I'd basically be paying for the new engine over 2-3 months otherwise. I bought it for €2750 late 2016, but have spent about 3k on it since then between services and the headwrecking volvo ABS control module problem.

Just to add to the headwreck, my insurance is out on Monday-I assume it'd be best to keep that running on the volvo, even though it's not drivable atm? Any help is greatly appreciated as my head is more melted than the old engine atm!!

    For a TLDR,
financially, am I better off looking for a new (old) car than placing a new engine in an older car?

I would not spend 2k on this car tbh.

What sort of warranty are you getting BTW?

For 750 you might be able to buy a less risky petrol car, but obviously there is no warranty either that it will last long.

If you can hold off until you have better budget I would do it.

And finally you are under no obligation to renew your policy, but keep in mind that if you are to buy old car next, it could be more difficult to insure it as a new customer.

Thanks Wonski...haven't gotten as far as talking warranties or whether to go ahead yet or not, it's all just happened this morning, so trying to figure out my next moves -mechanic is hoping to get a full proper price etc for me on Monday.

Might just cough up for the insurance for the moment and then switch it to a newer older car, rather than risk losing any no claims/dates on it.
    Thanks again.

Your ncb will not be lost, it is valid for next two years, but some insurance companies don't offer good rates (if any) for older cars.

If you decide to spend 2k on another engine, you want a warranty. Otherwise walk away and visit the bangeromics thread on this forum ;)

From your post it seems you can't afford a new engine anyway if all you can spend on another car is €750.

What engine is in your volvo? Is it the 1.6?

Yeah, it’s a 1.6 diesel. The garage is one I use regularly & had mentioned letting me pay it over a few mths, but I’d be afraid that the money spent on a new engine over those few mths would be better off spent on a car that I won’t be sinking money into again in the future, if that makes sense.

Step 1. Have a good read of this thread.

Step 2. List your Volvo on DD, adverts etc. as a for parts or repair.

Step 3. Head onto done deal and start searching for a nice simple n/a petrol car with a reputation for reliability to tide you over till you feel you're in a position to upgrade again or indeed keep driving it until it's no longer economical to do so.

If you need something to get by look up bangeromics and the likes of a Toyota Corolla to get you around.

It failed NCT a few weeks ago on emissions, or, rather, the guy in the test centre stoppped the emissions test as he was afraid it was gonna blow. The turbo went on me as I was driving back from there, left into the garage, who said there was a some blockages, they cleared those & they’d reccommend a new turbo for it.

Dropped it back in Friday to get a full run through before NCT today, they said there was a lot of blockages (carbon build-up was one that was mentioned I think), they took it out for a spin, it was driving better, so they tried the emissions test and the engine gave up.

I’d like to say I have more technical info than that but my brain really only registered that my engine & therefore my lovely comfy car is ****ed; and I need to figure out moneywise what works out best for me asap!

carbon build up is not good so wondering type of oil in use and motorway driving done per week, thinking people are leaving a simple oil and filter change too long, sorry to hear your bad luck.
