bad steering vibration

I've started getting a fair bit of a steering vibration

It is not speed related - it happens at any speed.

More oddly, it goes away, not at certain speeds, but it comes at all speeds and then goes, not occurring at any speed.

What I noticed when stopped was a fairly strong smell of brake dust.

Any ideas what it could be?

Sounds like a wheel balancing issue or wheel bearing on the way out. Do you hear a whine or grinding noise at low speeds?

What is the vibration issue like under braking? Any worse?

I dont think its a balance issue as it goes away at all speeds or comes at all speeds.

when the vibration is there it doesnt vibrate any worse under braking.

you could be right on the wheel bearing - its a noisy car so to be honest its hard to hear anything - never mind a wheel bearing !

As above. You've a brake sticking in. The vibration happens when it gets hot.
