So you may know I sold the touring a few months back and I've been in a bangernomics bora while I save. I've approx 11-12k to spend on another car and I can only think of bmws. I'm caught between which 5 series to buy.

E60. Will get a low mileage facelift 08/09 sub 9k but starting to look dated. Diesel engines bomb proof.

F10/F11. Did they sort the Diesel engine issues with the F11

I'm only looking to buy a 3.0 diesel from 08+ or the right 2.0. Must be msport. Absolutely must be. Automatic too.

Opinions greatly welcome on engines, specs etc as I'm fairly lost at the moment.

You going with Touring again ?

Have you considered Audi at all...

Ive had 3 BMWs myself so can understand the allure. But what is your specific requirements outside of large engine and sporty ?

I would prefer another touring yes but I read a lot on the rear suspension on them and the fact they need a compressor and other serviceable parts and can go very very wrong. I'm not sure about anything after the e60 however.

    I'm not really considering
Audi. I'm not a fan of the styling at all. I love the q7 though. There's just something nasty about the dash boards entertainment system.

Main requirements. Sporty, automatic, colour, alloys, interior spec.

I've had a E60 530 sold it about 2.5yrs ago was feeling very dated, moved to a f10 530 and no engine issues with both wouldn't be concerned about buying a f10 530, only things I've needed to change in 100k is a wishbone at each side and break pads/tyres.
Have always let BMW do the engine service just incase it decides to blow but not worried about it, find the service cheap seen as they give you a lend car so I'm not down a day.

F11 Tourings have self levelling rear suspension as standard afaik and it has a known issue with the suspension air bags or in some cases the suspension compressor. Not sure how widespread it is but like everything at the end of the day if you worry about every single fault you read you'd end up buying nothing. BMWs are like most premium cars, when something big goes wrong it usually costs alot to fix.

Tourings are rarer and tend to fetch a little more than the saloons. Have you looked at importing?

I haven't looked at importing as I'll be financing a chunk of the car.

Fair enough, id be the opposite having spent alot of time in both i think Audi have the edge on the interior styling. BMW is just too boring.

the e60 is now too dated tbh so id probably discount that personally. So F10 F11 would be the what id go for

Still looking. Slim pickings on donedeal. I'm limited to buying from a dealer as no1 I want to finance and no2 I want a warranty.

Attention has turned to e91 (3 series touring)

As usual I want everything, msport, auto, Idrive etc.

I'm going to be stuck in my bangernomics Bora forever :(

Why do you want to get car finance, wouldn't a personal loan give you a lot more options like jumping on plane and bringing one home.

I don't want a loan showing up for my mortgage application.

A bank will probably underwrite any loan a garage gives you so it'll be spotted when they run a report with with the icb, you'd want to check that out.
I don't think having a personal car loan will make or break the application, they'll be stress testing your for a lot more.

Car finance will show up on mortgage application and you will more than likely be paying for it from your current account.

I don't want a loan showing up for my mortgage application.

How will you avoid the repayments showing in your account(s)? Either way, by not declaring the repayment obligation you're committing fraud.

I can say, from insider knowledge of one major bank over here, if the attempted fraud is detected you will never draw down any kind of loan from that bank ever again.

I'm not sure a newer car is worth it, but YMMV.

As indicated finance will show up on your credit check.

I'm not sure who told you it wouldn't but it's not true

Would a petrol be a possibility? 330i estate would be a peach.

Absolutely, I do VERY little miles a 330i or 335d would be great. Tbh the 2.0 diesel isn't even that desirable to me but given the lack of choice in the engine department in Ireland..

If you do very little miles why are you thinking diesel? Give M6 motors in Galway a shout if you want a dealer to source something for you. Alan is brilliant and I say that as a happy customer. The thing is finding what you want will be hard as it is petrol but some garages will be able to source it for you.

The amount of 3.0 petrols on DD is pretty decent if you were willing to go outside the estate brackets.

Not a dealer but well under budget so a lower CU loan could be got which won't hurt the mortgage application too much.

The interior of the E60 feels much older than it is. I have an 06 525i and the interior feels like its from something not long past the millennium.

€2,350 motor tax per year? It'll stay on DD for a long while too!

It came out in 03 so it probably was designed in 2000. But there's nothing fresher looking from that era, mine still gets great compliments when people get in. Mines an 06 too. The infotainment is behind the times of course but in fairness it's the first car I know of that had a full colour screen. I've a sports interior I'll bang up a few pictures I have later.

No penalty points for tax, why would you bother just pay the €60 fine each time.

It's going to be seized eventually then you'll have to pay back taxes plus fines plus storage to get it back.
No market for that car here at all

The screen makes it look even older, it looks drab and cheap and isn't even dimmable or switchable. Didn't the contemporary A6 have a screen? And the E-Class?

The W211 has a far nicer and more timeless interior, the e60 has a disappointing amount of hard plastics and cheap feeling switchgear given the price new. Cars with the dark wood option look far better but almost all cars went with the default shiny silver obviously plastic dashboards.

I'm still looking at that Z4 - low miles and good price, change of ownership a month ago...

I was reading something just yesterday that said the interior was designed in the late 90s!

Mine is definitely dimmable and can be switched off too.
The w211 didn't have one as far as I know my uncle had an 04 one I drove a good bit and it didn't but it may have received it during it's updates later.

Mine is definitely dimmable and can be switched off too.

The screen is so poor that the backlight can't be switched off. Even the screen used on the E46/Rover 75 (which was colour and had satnav/tv) could be fully switched off.

I do a lot of night driving and the screen on my e61 is a constant irritant.

w211 had the screen from launch as an option, COMAND-APS NTG1.
