Yes, alcohol abuse is by far the most destructive illness in Irish society. Prepare to be attacked here by the above for saying that, however.

Their career wasnt ruined because of drink, it was ruined cos they decided to Drink & Drive.......

I wouldn't say he has ruined his career. He drove drunk, crashed, was abusive, took a swing at an officer and upon sobering up realised his position was untenable and resgined. His option now is to get help and rehabilitated. If he is successful, he will be okay, the yanks love a good comeback story.

6 post is and I still don't know who we're talking about. I refuse to be sucked in by second hand clickbait.
So, I'm going to guess it was Tom Hanks; I'm so disappointed to jump to the random conclusion that he's been drinking

Its America. You can do whatever the fook you like, once you apologise, go to rehab and act reformed for a while. They love a good hero to zero back to hero story. Tiger Woods the sex addict (amongst other things allegedly) being a prime example.

Irish peoples relationship with alcohol is a bit like the Americans relationship with firearms. Everyone on the outside looking in can see the damaged it causes but we view it as our god given right to get sh*t faced

Give up the gargle and he'll have another thing to help him sell his sports psychology business. Dealing with athletes with addiction problems.

Imo not the alcohol that's ended his career rather the fact he choose to drink and drive and then behave like a total ar@ehole when he crashed.
    Good riddance i say.

In fairness yes but we're not the only ones. We just have it attached to us. In my experience running pubs in a big city I have seen 1st hand the Aussies, Americans, English, Welsh, Scots, Kiwis, Spanish, Koreans, Japanese just to name a few get just as messed up as we do. My local when I lived in Sydney has happy hour from 7am-9am. Early morning shopping followed by a few beers at 7am was the norm for aome people.

Hi, your resident Brexit-loving British tabloid reader here. First it's not an illness imo, it's weak mindedness. People need to stop blaming everything else for their problems. Is alcohol adictive? Not really, some people have addictive behaviours and will use whatever they can to get their fix. Some alcohol, some cannabis, some injecting heroine. 95% of the population get on just fine I'd say. I drink sometimes, sometimes I have drank far too much, but that was my fault. If people have a problem and they turn to drink to fix it, then they are the problem and not the drink.
This guy got in to trouble because he's a nob, when he had a drink he became a bigger nob. When he got into his car he became a massive nob, and when he started threatening the police his nobiness reached a new height. He's not a victim of the vicious dreaded drink, he's a nob. The poloce should teach him a lesson he wont forget.
Instead he'll do the chat show circuit talking about his problem with drink and how it turned his life upside down. But now he's battled through with the support of his family and friends. That with continued support he will vow never to become a 'victim' of alcohol dependance ever again. With the aid of a good publicity agent he'll remain a nob, but everyone will think he's a hero.
