Morrissey denounces Halal meat as "evil" attacks Theresa May and Sadiq Khan

Morrissey has made an extraordinary – even by his standards – series of pronouncements in a new interview published on his website, attacking halal meat producers, Theresa May, Diane Abbott and Sadiq Khan, among others.

The former Smiths frontman – already infamous for his statements on race, animal welfare and more – criticised halal meat production, the Islamic method of animal slaughter. He claimed that “halal slaughter requires certification that can only be given by supporters of Isis”, and described it as “evil”. He also described Jewish kosher food production as “very cruel”, and called for it to be banned.

Halal slaughter involves live animals having their throats cut and their blood drained. The vast majority of halal meat producers stun the animals before killing them, just as they do in non-halal production. To carry out halal slaughter, you must be a Muslim with a certificate of competence from the Food Standards Agency, and work in an approved abattoir. “I am not saying that stunned slaughter is acceptable, because it couldn’t ever be,” Morrissey added. “If you use the term ‘humane slaughter’ then you might as well talk in terms of ‘humane rape’.”

He criticised prime minister Theresa May for calling the Muslim Eid al-Adha festival a “joyous celebration” … “as millions of animals had their throats slit to mark the occasion. I wondered what kind of compassion she could possibly have.” He also said May was “incapable of leadership. She cannot say her own name unless it’s written down on a cue card in front of her.”

Elsewhere in the interview, he describes UK politics as “a moral disaster on every level. Even Tesco wouldn’t employ Diane Abbott [Labour’s shadow home secretary].” London mayor Sadiq Khan is also criticised: “London is debased. The mayor of London tells us about ‘neighbourhood policin’’ ... this is the mayor of London! And he cannot talk properly!”

Just saw Morrissey's name amongst the top trends on twitter and then found this

Does he actually believe all the crap he says or does he say these things to sell more tickets?

That joke isn't funny any more. Bigmouth Strikes Again. Etc.

Also, his gigs still almost all sell out.

It's tiring thinking of the inevitable ad hominem attacks against Morrissey rather than the topic under discussion.
I agree with him in relation to halal slaughter and Diane Abbott though.

Good man Morrissey. Love him or hate him, he's always good for straight shooting.

He's dead right about May, Khan and Abbott too.

Having read his autobiography, I have no doubt he believes these things.

On the meat items above, I'm sure you might hear similar from many vegans. His statement on Khan though is ridiculous though IMO.

Feckin hell I have new found respect for Morrissey.
Still doesn't mean I want to sit through a concert of his.

He is on the money regarding the politicians and British politics.
May is an idiot whose Brexit strategy is just to keep the tories somehow together and fook the country.
    Abbott is an eejit.
And Khan's answer to terrorism is that people should just accept it as part of living in a modern European city.
"As far as racism goes, the modern Loony Left seem to forget that Hitler was Left wing,” said Morrissey. “But of course, we are all called racist now, and the word is actually meaningless.

“It’s just a way of changing the subject. When someone calls you racist, what they are saying is ‘hmm, you actually have a point, and I don’t know how to answer it, so perhaps if I distract you by calling you a bigot we’ll both forget how enlightened your comment was’.”

    Nail on head. :D

    And he goes on.
Speaking on the subject of acid attacks, he continued: “London is second only to Bangladesh for acid attacks. All of the attacks are non-white, and so they cannot be truthfully addressed by the British government or the Met Police or the BBC because of political correctness.

“What this means is that the perpetrator is considered to be as much of a victim as the actual victim. We live in the Age of Atrocity.”

I am not allowed discuss …

He's gone vegan - I think that explains plenty.

Oh and he makes loads of money from his 'meat is muder' album and sounding off ..

Funny not all vegans appear to like him. Like this extreme bunch -

Hitler was fairly left wing economically; the Nazis we're actually the National Socialist Workers Party. Stalin and Mao were clearly also left-wing in this sense, as is the North Korean Kim dynasty.

The big issue arises when people attempt to project economic, social and other ideologies on a stupid 2 dimensional line. So while what Morrissey said is accurate, it's being deliberately obtuse, but then, that's what he does...

May is particularly thick. Not sacking Jackson, actually even giving him a job in the first place, is inexcusable.

This extract of the interview wasn't quoted in the OP and despite any value in his other points it's all undermined by the below quote.
Morrissey instead throws his weight behind For Britain, the far-right party set up by former Ukip member Anne Marie Waters, someone he namechecked in a recent concert on the BBC. He said he was supporting the party because “they have the best approach to animal welfare”.

Nor was the fact that there’s a fairly large suspicion that Morrissey is interviewing himself in the actual interview, given how sycophantic it is and the fact that no-one has ever heard of the interviewer.

I heartily recommend browsing some Morrissey fan forums if you’re stuck for 10 minutes entertainment. It’d put the civil war here to shame.

I never said any of above were socialists. Again, you're just assuming left-wing and socialist are synonymous, they're not. Hitler can be left-wing economically and not be socialist in the same way that Netanyahu can be right-wing economically and not be a Christian Democrat.

Main overriding theme that left-wing and right-wing contain many subdivisions. Quite useless as specific labels these days.

I'd say most non-Muslim people would either not think about where their meat comes from or they would prefer it came from an animal that was killed as quickly as possible.

What's barbaric is the insistence on making animals suffer as much as possible. "I'm not eating that chicken because it didn't have it's throat slashed and its veins drained of blood" sounds like the belief of someone from the stone age.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,026 ✭✭✭Amalgam

You're included in the Halal merry-go-round, wether you're Muslim or not, most chicken in northern Europe is killed Halal. It is a situation the poultry industry doesn't really want to talk about..

There's a backlash in the Netherlands over this. The death is *not* instant. Bleed out an animal, fine, but shock it first.

I distinctly remember RTE doing a feature on the very last Jewish butchers, here in Dublin, the cattle were turned over on a large metal contraption to bleed it out. No thanks. Just use a bolt and get it over with, no kinky stuff please.
