    Hi All,

Would appreciate some help on this if anyone knows.

I'm looking to purchase a Commercial four seater 2015 Ford Kuga Zeneca 2 litre from a business owner i know.

-Can i tax it as a four-seater for private use (no fifth seatbelt in middle back seat) with the tax office? Are there any other conditions for converting commercial to private for this type of vehicle.

I've had two days in a row with over a 40 minute wait on hold with the tax office, should have came here first!

You can, but you may be liable for VRT as it is higher on a passenger vehicle than the original commercial rate. Other than that sending the registration cert to Shannon listing change of use to change the tax class.

    Thanks for quick response Bob.

How do i go about working out the possible VRT implications? In order to work out if cheaper buying another jeep..

Not sure, as the last time I did this it was on a 12 year old van and no VRT liable. I’m sure someone will be along to fill in the blank

This can be problematic process and you might not get get a cost until you are completing the process with revenue....

Yip, tbh the jeep might hold more value remaining commercial depending on a few factors

You can change the tax class to private and it's based on engine size - reasonable if it's a newer 1.5, but a touch pricey if it's the older 2.0 version.

You will probably run in to problems insuring it though as it's a commercial, and that's why the resale value of the 4 seat is appalling compared to the 5 seat model. It's more hassle than it's worth to get it reclassified from N1 commercial to M1 passenger.

Will you have issues as it’s down as a factory 4 seater?

From the feedback from insurers, it shouldn't be any hassle to get private insurance on it. Should know some more in a couple of weeks will let you know.

Hi .as far as l know you can go online and get vrt calculation .just Google vrt.ie .I know from looking at importing a car from northern Ireland that you can get a fairly good estimate as you have to supply make, model.engine size ,mileage and so on. It's worth checking out.

Just note that VRT.ie isn’t an official site. The calculator is on the Revenue website.

How did you get on with the conversion?
Did you go ahead with it?
I’m considering something similar at present.
