Sell, trade or scrap...? 05 Astra 1.7 Diesel

    Hi folks,

I don't post in here, because I'm not into cars! I drive one out of necessity in Ireland if I'm honest, so any advice on my query would be much appreciated.

I have a Vauxhall 05 Astra estate, 1.7 diesel. Time to get rid of it I think.
NCT due, so if it passed, I'll look at options.

I am aware that because it has high mileage, (200,000) a big engine, and is old, it might be a bloody nightmare to try and get rid of it?

I'm not looking to buy a new car either, so wouldn't be able to take advantage of scrappage offers.

Looking at Done Deal etc, I'd say I'd be lucky if I got €1,000 for it, but I suppose a €1,000 is better than nothing.

I mean, would someone buy a 13 year old car now with a big engine?

(I'm looking to move abroad next year, so might get something like a VW Polo to see me through in the meantime.)

When did 1.7 litre become a big engine?

To answer the original question, if your moving abroad next year then it makes sense to put the car through the NCT and see how it gets on and worth keeping until you move abroad if it passes. As it stands it's not worth much but it's not going to lose a whole lot more over the next year so it doesn't make much sense replacing it with another car just for a year unless the Astra is dying or uneconomical to get through the NCT.

I guess you are right. I should get it through the NCT first.
Though the last few times driving out of Dublin, the engine management light came on for a few seconds, which wasn't a good sign.
Had it serviced last September, so maybe another one is due.
If something goes wrong with it that would cost more than €400 or €500 to fix, then it's time to get rid I think.

As bazz26 said that engine size is taxable if you can get the car through until you move away with the least expense wud be my thinking i can assure you that an oldish vw polo is a minefield

Really? haha. Always thought the VW, Fiesta, smaller cars were solid. I guess not!
I'll see how the NCT goes first. I always live in fear of it packing in on the M50 or the N7 motorway.
It broke down a few years ago on a Friday night at 9:30 on the way back to Limerick in the middle of nowhere... :(
