I'm looking at buying an item from someone I don't know. They have said that they'll ship the item by courier and I can pay them by bank transfer. However, since I don't know this cat, what if any guarantees or comebacks do I have if they pocket the cash and don't send it?

You have no guarantees. There isn't protection like on a credit card. People do get stung with this and you would probably be better off walking away when it's a stranger.

    None.
it is a very much preferred payment method for scammers.
That said it is quite a common patment method in Germany in particular.

You have no protection or recourse to refund using it as a payment method and would be relying on the seller for any refund/recourse.

I've suggested paypal, but he doesn't have an account so its a bit fishy.

I've suggested Cash on Delivery from the courier, and failing that I'm out....

    Thanks for the advice
