Picked up an E90 recently that originally had run flats. I want to get a space saver on Adverts to leave in the boot but not sure what size I need.

The alloys are 40/18's. Most of the spacesavers available are 16's. Do i Just need to get a spare with a wider profile tyre which will have the same overall diameter as the alloys?

Generally the space saver wouldn’t have the same outside diameter as the full size wheel. Not sure if there would be issues using a space saver. E.g would it clear the brakes and would you have issues with the diff or with traction control etc.

Yeah, I have a 16" spacesaver which was in an e46. It's the right pcd but must check to see if it clears brakes etc.
I read that if for example you have a 17" alloy with a 50 profile tyre, a 16" spacesaver will work as long as it has a 60 profile on it. I assume the idea is to keep the outside diameter the same as the rest of the wheels/tyres, then it shouldn't play up with the diff and traction control. Don't know though.

There are issues - as you menioned the diff warms much more, the traction control does not work etc.

That's why the space-saver wheel in intended to get one to the garage, not keep driving.

That's some pub logic... The height of the sidewall of the tyre is expressed as the percentage of its width. 185/50/16 would have completely different diameter than 245/50/16.

As long as the brakes and the screws fit, you'll be fine for short periods of time.

I just bought a full size spare for a euro trip and its the same outside diameter as my space saver.
I know because it fits in the well.
its about 3 times as wide though!
