Thinking of buying a BMW 123D

I've been looking a long time now and my current 'car I'm buying' is a 123d coupe. I'd be looking at getting a '10 - '11 car. Would this still be a crazy choice with the N47 engine?

Anyone? Main thing I want to know is what year did they stop eating can chains?

They never did. BMW claims anything built after March 2011 does not suffer, but there are still reports of newer cars suffering from the problem. Earliest F2X 125d/225ds also have the N47, so may also suffer from this problem (although in newer cars less parts need replacing so the job is less expensive if it needs to be done).

Isn't it the twin turbo version? - My understanding is that these suffer a lot less from failure.

Maybe the reason they suffer less is because there's so few of them around so we just don't hear about it?

The parts making up the chain and the rest of the engine are the same anyway - just the turbos and injectors are different (BMW always fits different sized injectors depending on model position in the range, there's more to models higher up the range than just a simple remap).

The only engine that really doesn't suffer is the 3.0 N57, that engine is fine to buy unless you do something stupid like ignore the service intervals and go say 30,000 miles on the same oil (even with BMW's ridiculous service intervals, the oil will need to be changed at least every 18,000 miles).
