    Hi guys
So the coil has gone again im my hot water cylinder. This is the second one to go in 14 years. New one is circa 600 bucks. Dual coil fully insulated
Should they be lasting longer than this??
Can't believe I need a new one again!!

Is the water supply from a well?

Really depends on your water OP, our copper cylinders last about 7-10 years, not just us its the same for everyone on the same water (originally a council system now IW, water comes from local river). I thought about using a stainless steel one when I replaced ours recently as the price wasn't much more. However I could get the exact same copper cylinder with all the fittings in the same location which made swapping out the old for a new one a very easy DIY job so stuck with copper. I'll let you know how I feel about that in another 7 or so years.

Nope and I have a water softener.

A water softener system is great in the a hard water area. Have you had your water tested? Hard water might not be the issue

The standard grade 3 cylinders are a shjt copper alloy. Test your water. It could be acidic. If water is ok then fit a Grade 2 copper cylinder

I've always used Grade 2 copper and it still often only lasts 7 years. We have slightly acid water that is highly chlorinated and I think the excessive chlorine is part of the problem but could be wrong.

Use a grade 2 with an anode fitted, it will allow the copper to build up a protective coating to make it last longer

Yes I had my water tested and that's why i fitted a softener. Just thought I should get longer out of a cylinder but as some have pointed out 7-10 years seems acceptable.

But is the coil any different between the grades?

    I’d imagine it should be.
