    Hello,

I really hope you all can advise me. This is a delicate matter, as many of you already know.

Ive finally got the courage to do eye surgery. I would like to be treated by a well reputed clinic (or other). One that has a really good reputation. Im on the point of making an appt but really need advice based on previous experiences. I can afford the treatment but dont have the luxury of paying 5k/eye, if u know what i mean.

Whats the best place to go for eye surgery please?

Thank you all for any insight or direction (do's and dont's etc).

    Kind regards

    Graham

    Welcome Graham,
I'd definitely recommend Optilase, like others on here I'm very happy with my experience.

Dr Wayne Crewe Brown is the surgeon I had in the Optilase Dublin clinic in 2012.
He also operated in their Cork clinic at the time.
I googled him and found he was very experienced.

It's worked out well for me, something I had thought about for years but really had the push to go for it after I saw my younger sisters good experience with Optilase before me.
My sister actually had some slight regression and had to get a top up job done on 1 of her eyes 6 months after surgery, they did it with no fuss and she's still happy with them also.

I had my initial consultation and the post surgery follow up checks with one of their ophthalmologists in their Limerick clinic.

I was very happy with their aftercare, plenty of post surgery check ups.
At my 1 year follow up check up they discharged me with "2 lines better than 20-20 vision".
Its now over 5 years since surgery with no issues and I really appreciate not having to mess around with lenses or glasses.

Prior to my Laser surgery I was having serious dry eye problems at the time and wearing contacts was no longer possible.
Some colleagues recommended an optician in Ennistymon, he actually suggested laser surgery to me too, surprised as most opticians I met would never suggest anything outside of what they sell.

I'll send you a PM with referral info you can use for "€100 Off" discount if you wish.

    Best of luck!

Thanks so much for your very helpful reply. I will definitely call Dr Wayne Brown and check out Optilase.

Just one last quick question... one that's on everybody's mind... how long did the treatment actually take? I read online about 15 minutes per eye.

Also, about how many days before your eyes are no longer sensitive/blurry whatever after the treatment?

    Have a great day.

I went with Optilase for my surgery too and had the PRK with Eamonn Hynes. He was a lovely man really made me feel at ease and a great surgeon.

Being that I got the PRK I only needed one machine instead of 2, the whole procedure took maybe 20 mins? I can't remember 100 percent but the actual laser part took maybe 30-40seconds per eye? I know the weaker one took a few seconds longer! I just know it was well under the 60seconds anyways! But I can't say for Lazik!

For PRK you wear a bandage lens for 5 days after surgery so def blurry then, but no worse than wearing no glasses (i was - 4.75 and - 5.75), on day 5 i had an eye test and was legally cleared to drive! Which honestly I found scary as vision was def not 100percent.. No wonder theres so many crashes on the roads! I took 2 weeks off after (they tell you to take 1 anyways, I had mine just before christmas so worked it that way!).. And my vision was clear by the time I went back to work, now it took maybe till my 3 month checkup before I was declared 20:20 but that's usual enough! With sensitivity i found night driving particularly annoying for a few weeks, i wore sunglasses to help the glare, and my eyes tired very easily, but it didn't help that i worked on computers in a pharma company so recirculated air and computer glare all day! (eyedrops were my friends!) honestly sounds worse than it is haha I'd still do it again in the morning!! Best money I ever spent!!

For Lazik one of my colleagues got it and he had it saturday morning and had 20:20 vision the monday! So its more invasive but waaayyyy quicker healing! I couldn't get that one as my corneas were too thin! So no point deciding on one over the other before you see what you are eligible for :)

Hey, thanks so much for that reply. Its very reassuring. This is one of those things you just gotta book it and do it. No thinking about it!!! :) I'm in IT so all day in front of screen... glasses have me damned. I'm 48 years old, the idea of having to look for my glasses for the rest of my life is a non runner!

    Thanks again.

Just an FYI Dr Crewe Brown no longer works for Optilase.

I'd highly recommend Michael O Keefe in the Mater Private. Top guy in Ireland as far as laser surgery is concerned

Thank you! I saw that Dr Brown is only in UK now. I'll try Dr O Keefe

Eligibility appointment requested. Thanks for getting me over the line!! Your replies helped a lot. Thanks! G

I also had Lasik done by Optilase at Ely Place 3 years ago. My eyes were -3 both and are now 20/20 with better overall eye health too! Their pre surgery consultation / check, surgery itself and post care was excellent. I'm very happy with outcome and can only recommend them.

It helped me greatly chatting to people who had it done as I was indecisive for about 5 years before finally having Lasik. So anyone interested can feel free to PM me if they need any advise.. happy to help! And of course I also have a referral discount if anyone is in need. All the best! :)

I had Lasik Wavefront done a few years ago with Optilase in Opera Lane. I'm very squeamish with anything touching my eyes, so bad that I couldn't even manage to wear contact lenses! I made the mistake of watching close up videos of the procedure on youtube before I went in so to say I was apprehensive is an understatement.

When I went in the nurse even had trouble putting the numbing gel in my eyes, luckily he was more bouncer than nurse :D. Once that was done everything was completely pain free, even calling it uncomfortable would be a bit of a stretch so don't worry about it.

At one point the doctor had to tell me to stop trying to blink, something which was impossible at the time. I asked him what he meant. It turns out I was fighting everything so hard my eyebrow was almost blocking the laser :pac:. As soon as he pointed it out I relaxed and everything flew. Roughly 20 seconds of laser in each eye. Its just like looking at a faint purple light.

Immediately afterwards your eyes feel a little dry but no worse than having missed a nights sleep. Your vision is much better instantly and I went back to work the next day. It took a few more days before I could read off the end of the eye test chart.

Sometimes I think I have more "floaters" in my eyes than I used to but even if I'm not imagining that, I think of all the things that are so much easier/better when you don't need to worry about glasses. I've taken up various water sports, cliff diving, etc. Things I couldn't have done before. All in all, go for it, there's nothing to worry about.

I felt sound after it, tired and didn't want to open my eyes, but apparently that's the effects of the vallium. Slept on and off the whole way home (2.5hours), helped that it was dark! Defo bring sunglasses! The clinic seems SUPER bright and white after getting it done!
