I'm taking a career break from the middle of next month and heading to Australia for 18mths and already have work lined up. I may end up staying in Australia permanently, will see how things go.

The tax yr in Ireland is Jan - Dec and in Australia is 1st July - 30th June.

Should i wait until after the 1st July when I receive my group certificate in Oz (equivelent of P60) to claim my tax back here as I presume I'll be taxed on world wide income even though a double taxation agreement is in place.

Also i'll be working literally up to the day before I catch my flight to Oz and then taking a few days leave before the career break starts. I guess I won't be getting a P45 (do you get one even on a career break) until after the career break officially starts?

Finally any way I can try and work out how much I'll get in a refund (presuming it's just based on Irish income)? I was looking at the taxcalc.ie website and my payslip, but i couldn't really work it out.

I don't know if you get a P45 when you go on a career break but if you do you will be able to apply for a refund straight away. Submit the P45 and a Form P50 (which you can find on revenue.ie) into the tax office and make sure to state on the P50 how long you intend to be in Australia for. As you are tax resident in Ireland this year and intend to be non-resident next year you are only taxable on your income up until the date you leave Ireland.
