As far as I can recall, the Family Law Act 1995 here states that anyone under 18 can marry with their parents consent and notice from the Family Circuit Court or High Court.

Hmm. Wonder about the reason for that.

13 thousand+ children getting married a year is still 13 thousand+ too many, regardless of the size of the population.

Sixteen or seventeen year olds (and others much younger) are not renowned for the quality of their decision making, and it should have no place in a civilised country for any reason, not for Irish Travellers and not for anyone else.

Three 11yr old girls married men in their 20's. That is just wrong and something you would expect to read about happening in the Middle East.

I'd be curious to know whether or not social workers and psychologists are involved in the process of getting an exemption and independent ones at that.

    I sure hope they are

Not as easy as it may sound

I was trying to tie the knot with Ivanka since she was about 13.

    Hoorbag judges wouldn't let me

What possible reason could someone have to defend child marriage? And yes ,16 and 17 year olds are children.

People manage to defend (or try to anyways) the most horrid actions and beliefs all day long, every day.

    Religion, 'culture', tradition, free choice....

    take your pick :(
