€15k budget for 2 cars

Looking for advice on what to buy. Planning to return from Australia next and want to buy 2 cars with a €15k budget. Thinking about spending €10k on the main family car with decent bootspace as I'll have 2 young kids and €5k on a smaller car.
What sort of cars(models and years) would people recommend in these price ranges?
Also am I likely to have much bargaining power by going to a garage with cash and buying both cars from the same place?

    Ford Mondeo, skoda Octavia/superb,

Mid range likes of Hyundai i30, Ford focus, skoda fabia, Kia ceed,

Small car likes of Suzuki swift, Hyundai i20, Ford fiesta, Fiat punto, Toyota Yaris etc.

Regardless of what you get I'd weigh up the costs of insurance first........

This could have a major impact on what car choice you make

Maybe I've been in Australia too long but I'd probably see the mid range cars as small cars and probably wouldn't even entertain the small cars.

I'm leaning towards the octavia/ Mondeo type car as the family car though.

This is one of my major concerns. I'll be 40 next year and really shouldn't have to worry about the cost of insurance but it seems the insurance system in Ireland has lost the run of itself.
I'm currently insured in a 4 litre landcruiser for the equivalent of €500. Why is insurance so ridiculous!

I'm 46 no break in insurance in the last 20 years. A quote on my 1.9 A4 was 1250 with AIG. No claims or convictions. So you defiantly need to factor insurance costs into your budget. You could be starting from scratch with no no claims discount.

He might be. When I moved over from Switzerland (not EU either but still a bit closer than Australia) I had an official letter in English from my insurance, stating that I've been insured for 10 years and am in the cheapest bracket for premiums due to no claims. No insurance in Ireland gave a cr4p about that, I started like a person who just got their drivers license.

So OP: Have fun with the insurance and road tax costs of driving a massive 2 liter engine over here :)

Apparently some of the insurance companies are starting to accept no claims periods from Australia. I'll have 10 no claims from Australia when moving back so hopefully that goes in my favour.
I have allowed a few thousand for insurance and on road costs like tax on top of the €15k as I'm expecting the insurance to be steep.

How much mileage do you do? Will you be buying or renting a house?
If you're looking for an economical family car, you can get a 2013 Nissan leaf for around 8/9k. 120 road tax, 0 fuel cost, annual service about 70 quid. We are a family of 4, plenty boot space. Ideally you need a driveway where you can park it and plug it in though.

I have no idea what sort of mileage I'll do doing to be honest as I don't know where I'll be working or how much I'll be driving. There'll be a fair amount of country miles involved so not sure how practical an electric car would be.
I own a house with a driveway and am an electrician so I'd be able to install a charging point for it. It may be something I will look into down the track but probably not straight away.

Two very good options. Thanks for that. I presume if I were buying next year I would get 2011 and 2012 models for the 2010 and 2011 prices advertised.

Yeah, you might even get 2013 ones to be honest :D:D

Interested to know if people think in this instance it would make sense to try and buy both cars from the same dealer? Possibly could get a better price if the dealer is moving 2 cars in one deal.

Really depends on whether the dealer is struggling to shift the cars to be honest. It may well make a difference but often not as much as you may think.

Myself and a family member bought 2 cars (used) within a 2 or 3 weeks from a main dealer before and they didn't do much in terms of discounting more or extras
