Strange, Unfair Civil Service Probation Review

I had my Probation Review for my Clerical Officer job in the Public Sector. My review lasted 2 minutes. We barely discussed anything. Then, I was emailed a copy of my review where she pretty much failed me on everything.

I thought this is strange as her Supervisor has complimented my work frequently. I also feel comfortable in my role and have been given 80% of the work that is to be completed my me and my Reviewer. I told the Head of the Department that my work was not even mentioned in my Probation Review and he said maybe there is no problem with my work.

Then, I told the Head of the Department a number of unfair things she had done to me and comments she made. He said I should go for a Probation Review with her every 2 weeks. Does this seem fair? Has this happened to anyone else?

This I find strange, if you can stand over your work and honestly say you have worked to the best of your ability, then to me, your reviewer is on an ego trip or a bully or both, what grade is the reviewer and have others in the office had issues with this person?

Yes, I can stand over my work and it has been praised by this woman's boss. I think others have had issues with her as she was removed from running Human Resources. The problem is my rubbish review still stands and I don't know what to do about it.

Well you should email back and look for a detailed explanation and examples of where you failed in your duties, I would not let this rest.

Talk to your union rep too maybe.

Is it your 3, 6 or 9 month probation review?

She has to discuss the review with you before it is submitted. Did you see that you were going to fail? Did you express your disagreement.

The most important thing here is that your manager has examples of your underperformance. I would take a look at the managing underperformance circular and see the kinds of steps that should be taken, if these steps have not been taken with you then you need to email her and ask for detailed examples of why you failed certain aspects.

If you do not get a satisfactory answer then email her line manager asking them to review the decision.

The key thing here is that they need examples of where you are falling down in your work or behaviour. Don't forget that time-keeping and team work are parts of probation review as well.
