Hi. Considering a 1.2 tsi in a golf leon or octavia. I would like to insure our young lad as a named driver so want to keep the engine size down. I've read quite a lot and it seems that the ford 1.0 ecoboost can be troublesome and doesn't give great economy. I've read mostly good things about the 1.2 tsi, bar a small percentage experiencing chain issues. Had a look at honest John and while there were lots and lots of reports of engine problems they seemed to be with the diesels. Does anyone have good or bad experiences with this engine?

The newest 1.2tsi engines are belt driven, which is what you should find in a Golf Mk7 or new-ish Octavia. The early noughties ones in the Mk6 Golfs etc were chain driven and pretty much guarenteed to give trouble. The belted ones are much better by comparison, the odd leaky water pump and they might need an oil top up between services but no reason not to buy one.

Thanks. So I guess model year 2013 onwards for the new belt driven engine?

I've a 2014 Golf 1.2 TSI and It's perfectly fine for everything I need. I drove Wexford to Dublin return and Wexford to Maynooth return last week and averaged just under 6L/100km. That goes up a little if if doing lots of short journeys.

Seats are very comfortable and plenty of toys on my one.

Yep 152, it's the 110bhp version. Nice little engine and does mid to high 40s with a mix of driving.

A lot depend on the year and engine power.

I am not sure if the insurance companies look at cc of the engine or the bhp these day.
    1.2 TSI 63 kW 2013- CJZB (EA211) 1197 ccm, I4, 16V DOHC, turbocharged 63 kW (86 PS; 85 hp) at 4300-5300 rpm 160 Nm. (118 lb•ft) at 1400-3500 rpm 5-speed manual

    1.2 TSI 77 kW 2013- CJZA (EA211) 1197 ccm, I4, 16V DOHC, turbocharged 77 kW (105 PS; 103 hp) at 4500-5500 rpm 175 Nm. (129 lb•ft) at 1400-4000 rpm 6-speed manual

The above have 18 hp between them.

2015 1.0 TSI engines are more powerful again. 113hp compare to 85hp-103hp on the 2013 1.2 TSI.
Seems newer TSI engines are getting smaller but producing more power.
    1.0 TSI 85 kW 2015- CHZD

    (EA211)
    999 ccm, I3, 12v DOHC, turbocharged 85 kW (115 PS; 113 hp) at 5000-5500 rpm 200 Nm (148 lb•ft) at 2000 rpm 6-speed manual (MQ250), FWD

Sounds good if it is doing 47mpg in an Octavia.

Any further updates on the belt driven 1.2 tsi engines.

How is the reliability, any issues?

How is the economy as the km's go on?

Anyone change the timing belt yet, what was the price like?
