Did you use some plumbers tape?

Flax, boss White and a gasket should do it

Thanks very much, going to woodies in a few minutes, would boss white with the gasket alone have a chance of working if I can't get flax today?

Yes put it on both sides of the gasket and should be fine.pick up a new gasket if the other one has been used a few times

Have a good look if it leaks again. It just might be the soldered boss that's leaking, or even a pin hole near it. Sometimes they're unavoidable damaged during removal of the old immersion.

Put a wrap of ptfe on the threads of the new one, not so much as a seal, but ptfe greatly reduces friction on the threads, which also facilitates tightening of the new one.

Please follow site and charter rules. "Resistance is futile"

Check the contact surface of the boss where the immersion goes in and make sure it is perfectly clean with no bits of old gasket stuck to it and scrape the threads clean.
Also ensure that you haven't cross threaded putting in the immersion, you should be able to turn it by hand easily until it is fully home, then pinch it up tight with the spanner.
There should be no need for tape or flax, just a new gasket with a smear of boss white or uniwhite on each side and the job should be good.

It wasnt your fault, the weakness in the cylinder was there before you started.2 to 3 in 10 cylinders fail while changing the immersion.its just the luck of the draw.

Had same issue few weeks ago tried several times to fix it, created a small pin hole near the collar after I changed the imersion. Used two pack epoxy resin the one in a syringe. Taped tin foil around the collar leaving a small gap and poured the resin into the gap and covered the pin hole and full space gap between collar and tank. Took 30 minutes to cure. Hadn't an issue since. Will change tank and emmersion element at a later date. I did discover that epoxy resin is now being used in plumbing connections.

I gave up replacing cylinders decades ago because of this. I was always worried client would think I was ripping them off going from lets say a 150 quote to a 400 bill because the cylinder needed replacing. It was too stressful for me, I'd have a knot it my stomach having to explain to the client. :(
