    Hi

We have the Ateca 1.5 TDI Ecomotive Diesel

We plan on travelling from Ireland to the UK and travel from Fishguard to Cardiff and then to Bath then to Outer London and then back to Ireland via Holyhead possible stopping in Chester.

Looking at pricing trip and ferry aint cheap so trying to figure out approx. Diesel costs during our stay. Think Diesel cheaper over here so going to top up first.

Anyone any ideas as how to gauge costs approx?

Also no sat nav in car so is the best bet to us HereWeGo android app as this can be used offline and has voice. Google maps also can be downloaded and used offline also but no voice and more than likely we will take a wrong turn somewhere along the line and be good to get re routed via voice

Get your route onto Google maps, calculate the distance and let's say your car will burn 6l/100 km that should give you an estimate.

As for GPS I use Google maps and it's fine most of the time. If you are going from one place to another you don't really need it to tell you things all the time. Just keep an eye on signs and try to remember which exit you should take etc. Point to point GPS I only use for specific addresses.

Chester is a lovely place BTW. Spent some time there years ago and can't wait to go back.

Google maps is best but will use data.
    For offline I use HereWeGo

If you have a data allowance in Ireland you also get it in the EU - pre-paid plans won't let you use all your allowance abroad, but bill pay plans will.

No AppConnect/FullLink system in the car? Less than €200 as an option and integrates brilliantly with Google Maps on Android.

Fishguard to London is over 400km.
    London to Holyhead over 460km.
Plus some curising around you can probably assume 1000km trip in UK.

If your car can do 6l/100km then it's 60 litres.
    Assuming your tank can hold that much, it's 60 * €1.25 = €75.

Ferries are going to be way more expensive.

By law they have to, and my experience indicates they are complying unless you're on a prepaid or weird hybrid plan.

    Thanks for the replies

We have Android Auto and use this in Ireland with data on. Limited to 6gb in roaming data so may not use that up in 8-10 days if so can top up. Have here and waze also but usually use Google maps.

Think tank is 50l so just checking fuel prices in the UK. I think we can make it to London before filling up again. Maybe doing day trip to France for wine😊

Just cost of taking car abroad on trips expensive unless booked way in advance so this more last minute decision as junior to young to go somewhere to hot.

Still researching before deciding what we can do and more importantly afford 💶💶💸💸💳

Given the mileage, the diesel cost is nothing to be worried about.

Ferry, hotels and all other expenses will eat budget quickly.

Just FYI you can download offline maps on Google to minimize data usage. You might need to do it in sections as you need to download a square area so maybe just download each major town on the route? Might need to do a few sections but shouldn't take too long.

If you download the maps, Google will do distance fine without any data, although it will not have traffic updates for accurate times. If you have already download the map the traffic will not use much either.
I just have the island of Ireland on my phone all the time and download extra places for hols which I then delete afterwards.

What version of Android are you using. I was driving around Spain last week with Google maps telling me the turns and live traffic. I'm on 3 Pay as you go and have 6Gb of roaming data, over 4 days I'd used a gig of data but that was sending a few videos and loads of pictures.

In the UK at the moment and I am on Virgin Bill Pay 30GB per month.

    I got the following text.

Hi, while you are roaming in the EU you can use your Virgin Mobile plan as if you were at home. Subject to a fair use policy, which includes a data cap of 6.80GB per month. After that, any additional data consumed within the month while roaming in the EU will be charged at a rate of €7.38 per GB (on a per MB basis). Call 1908 free of charge for terms and information. Emergency call 112.

Diesel won't be a huge factor as said above but the average diesel price in UK at moment is £1.23 (€1.40) , source petrolprices.com. It is more expensive. Also traffic is usually a lot heavier in England so I find my mpg lower when driving there-buy maybe that's just my driving style!

Fuel is cheaper in supermarkets Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury. Expensive at motorway service areas.

This. Fuel is up to 10p a litre more expensive at service stations than in the towns and cities.
