Do Irish opticians tend to have a Spectrometer?

...and test for members of the public? Posts on places like Quora and news articles from the US indicate opticians will happily test your shades for UV protection but I've never heard of it. Would they look at me like I've two heads?

What you're looking for is a spectrophotometer, no opticians will have one but may have a basic set up that will do a quick test. Depends if they have a lab on site and if they actually carry that equipment even if they do. Are they prescription? Where are you based?

As RiseToMe said most opticians that have a lab on site will have a UV meter. Try explaining what you want it for rather than just asking for a spectrometer

Thanks folks, just want to validate UV400 claims on some imports.

In house opticians equipment won't be able to validate UV400 claims in any way at all, it will only tell you if uv protection is present not at what absorbion at a given wavelength. You need a full spectrophotometer that will analyse transmissions over every length and a separate calculation based on those readings.

If you are importing sunglasses you become the representative of that eyewear and need to validate its adherence to the full standard not just UV400. So you need them tested in an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory either at source with reports in English and put together as part of your technical file for import or you need them tested here with the reports being available for customs on this side.

For the record, UV400 is not a requirement of the ISO 12311/12 standard here, only if it is claimed on the packaging as in our applicable standard we put the cutoff at 380nm for uv.

It was just for items for my own use, not doing any retailing or distributing. I assumed it was a long shot. Cheers.

Depending on where you are based I'd be happy to have a look at them for you
