Alternative to footpaths

At the moment I have loose gravel around the base of my house however I had an issue with mice over the winter. The wall of the house is only plastered a few inches below where the gravel meets the walls of the house.

I noticed a couple of small holes at the base of the house where mice were burrowing down and entering the cavity through the block work left unplastered. They then made their way into the attic.

Before next winter I want to seal this point around the house. I will probably use a nice gravel/stone on the driveway with another section of the ground in question being some sort of slab for a patio type area. However that probably won't happen this year so just looking for a solution to the mouse problem for the moment.

So the mice, are digging through the unplastered block?

    I underestimate them!

The blockwork below was pretty poor to be honest , house had been built over 10 years. I finished it off.

Would you not just seal up any holes with mortar to start with. Why leave that ?

Any pictures of the hole they burrowed? If they are burrowing through the mortar then it sounds like you need something quite hard. The only alternatives to concrete footpaths I have seen are cobble block, concrete slabs or tarmac. But i suspect if the block work was properly pointed they wouldn't be able to get through it?
