Showing my friend old adverts from the 1980s and she thinks this packaging of Barry’s tea is racist.

Suppose they would have the PC brigade on their asses if that pack design was around today.

Wait until she sees the Lyons ads.

More proof that Barry’s tea is only second best. Lyons had dancing gollywogs:

As racist as the Kia Ora ad? How many black stereotypes can you get in to one ad?

'Blackface' refers to white people painting their faces black and singing and dancing as a form of entertainment. The picture on that box is a cartoon representation of Indians. I don't see how the two relate. Unless maybe they hired white cartoon characters and painted their faces.

It's not racist either. If anything it's a stereotype like the Dolmio ads.

Should we all be drinking Racist Tea now Father?

The characters in the Lyons ad weren't 'golliwogs' either. They were minstrels. The black and white minstrel show was very popular on RTE at the time.

If it was an ad for Grape Soda it would be 100%.

You have to remember this was the era of racist comedians who were cracking jokes about minorities then that would get them arrested today.

    A golliwog is defined as
A rag doll or mascot in the form of a caricature of a black minstrel.

    You sure that's RTE??

Production seems way to slick and the ladies look way to hot.

Looking at the description it seems it might be from the BBC.

Definitely BBC. Britain seemed to be full of hot women in the late 60s, early 70s. Here. Not so much.

That crowd are busy with the auld #MeToo or #IBelieveHer marches at the minute. You're sound for at least a week.

    This gets embarrassing.

I grew up with Robinsons jams, whose emblem was a golliwog. If you collected enough labels? WOW you could send for a metal gollie.. we all ate jam very fast

Even worse.... There were frequent eg fancy dress dos for kids at school and church events etc..We were far from well off.. yep,you guessed
A beret made into a golliwog wig with rug wool, school nlazer, and BLACK MAKE UP

Wouldn't have minded as much had i ever won anything

golliwogs are a sensitive issue! All my pals were in glorious costumes and there was i, GOLLIWOG~

Does anyone ever get a promotion in this famous PC Brigade? Like if you don't think that racist imagery that was once acceptable is no longer, could you move on up the ranks? Is there a Brigadier General? And more importantly, is there a PC Navy and Airforce?

My sister had a gollywog. She loved that doll. Never associated it with racism. To her it was just a doll with a black face. Different time. I don't see the point in retroactively being outraged.

I do remember though when they decided to remove the gollywog character from Noddy books/cartoons. Proper choice. The right thing to do........ Until you realised they replaced them with.... monkeys!!!!! Sweet Jebus

OP tell your friend to go and get a life for herself and to quit taking life so fücking seriously, she’ll be dead for long enough without having to worry about ridiculous stupid trivial things while alive.
