Is tanking a shower necessary? It seems to be a recent phenomenon since wetrooms have become popular but is it really necessary for regular shower?

why take the risk of not using it, 80 euro for tub of tanking is a lot cheaper than fixing water damage at later date.

I agree but I am asking retospectively as I don't think my fitter did it!

Tanking is the best job. Plumber might have used classi seal & that's a good product. If he used silicone & no other sealer it will leak eventually.

Most plumbers will say that it's the tilers job to make it watertight

I think they were working together but they used classi seal for sure but I don't think the tiler did anything beyond that except grout and silicon the corners.

I guess as long as I check the grout lines every couple of months, it should be ok? This was how showers were built during the 80s and 90s. I guess there were some leaks back then but I'll just have to keep an eye on it?

Originally, I got 3 guys to quote and two said it wasn't worth tanking where's the third said he would do it but charged more than twice the price for the full job (3 bathrooms). He also seemed like a bit of a cowboy. So I asked in the tile shop and they said it wasn't necessary except in wetrooms. Therefore, I figured I wouldn't push it. Regret that a bit because I didn't realise how easy it was!

Tanking is the best job but not the norm. Classi seal is excellent. Fitted properly it will never leak. I think you are safe

When you read the internet, it seems like tanking is the only game in town and world order will collapse if your bathroom is not tanked!

    How high does tanking go?

In my experience (celtic tiger new build), you're most likely to get leaks at penetrations in the shower, e.g. where the controls are or at the plug hole, not through the grout. Does tanking help with those?

It seems to usually go from the bottom to about a metre up but I guess some folks go to the ceiling.

Don't know if it would help on the fittings.
