    Hi Guys,
I read a thread a couple of months ago with some good advice on a photography course, but have lost the thread and can't seem to locate it...

I want to do an intensive beginners course in Dublin, just to get me familiar with camera controls etc... I need to be shown the basics in a hands-on way, but a photo walk might be too much, as I want to start from the beginning.

Can anyone recommend a course, day, night or weekend? I seem to recall Dublin Photography School & Institute of Photographers being mentioned...

Thanks, I've made contact but they don't seem to be running anything soon...

Perhaps try meetup.com - over here in Toronto, photography walks and courses are advertised on it.

A course is just finishing and will be running again in sept/oct.

You could always join the club. They run a novices workshop every 2nd monday which i found invaluable.

The open university run one far all levels. I think the best part is the feedback and critiques from your fellow students, it's also good for reminding you of things that are obvious but get taken for advantage.

Is open university a hands on course or by correspondence?

It's all online and you get access to Adobe software, providing you have a suitable computer.

You will be under a tutor who watches everything and you are encouraged to socialise with your fellow students. I believe that the socialising and offering each other advice and critiques was for me, the best part of the programme.

It's not free btw, although they do make allowances for unemployed etc.

I'm not convinced that would suit me. I can learn from YouTube tutorials, but I'd prefer to be shown the controls first hand.

I agree. If you haven't mastered the controls of your camera yet, you're not ready for a course where you are required to have the most fundamental basics in place.

Good luck finding one that suits you Blueform, I also learnt all my knowledge from youtube videos.

If there are no affordable courses running in your locality at the moment maybe one of the Alison online courses might suit. They go from absolute beginner to advances and are free.
