Is there a limit on how much you can claim? I spent 580 euros on GP, nurses and prescriptions in 2017. I entered this online and they sent me a P21 showing 180 refund due. Is this a percentage based on what I spent?

No limit that I’m aware of.

You get refunded at the lower rate of tax e.g. 20% so €580 claimed but refunded €180 doesn’t quite add up. Unless you’re due a refund from something else also.

Thanks Dudara so it should be 20% of the 580?

You get 20% of your medical expenses I think. The extra would be overpayment of tax, USC or prsi.

Ok great thanks. I did this online but also had to submit items by post for year of marriage review and a lump sum paid and taxed heavily in 2017 that was largely related to money due in 2016, so I'm hoping they owe me more back still. Maybe the extra here relates to those issues but I doubt it as I had been told to submit documents by post which I did the day after the medical expenses online.

You should get €116 refunded for you medical expenses. The balance of €64 is a refund for something else. But that should be detailed on your P21 I think?

Ok thanks I'll take another look and see where the overpayment came from.

Does it take long to get the refund?
I sent copies of receipts today & it seemed different to previous years, where you "kept records" yourself rather than submitting receipts. I do think it was quick enough before, hopefully that hasn't changed

I applied for just under 2grand non routine dental expenses on Sunday night. Did it all online on ROS website. Had the money in my account on Friday and the P21 in my account inbox on Thursday.

I didn't submit any receipts but will keep them for as many years as needed. You can store them digitally online I think but it's not necessary to upload them to process a claim.

I entered the info on Thursday morning and had P21 in my inbox online on Friday. No money yet but wouldn't expect it yet.

P21 will tell u if you're owed money. In the overpayment or underpayment section.

I was due a decent sum back about 2 weeks ago I received the money in my account 2 working days after receiving my P21

Only had a small amount for medical expenses so they never looked for receipts

Yes I know that (see the first post of this thread), I mean there's no money in my bank account yet but I wouldn't expect there to be.

You know how far back the can go asking for receipt? Still have mines up to 10 years ago as paper copies but haven’t bothered scanning them as there are quite many and medical receipt are often of many shapes and sizes and don’t really work with a document feeder. After hw long can I safely dispose of them?

Can we claim expenses done outside ireland ?

Can we claim expenses done outside ireland ?

Yes, as long as the medical service was provided by someone who is on an official register for medical practitioners in that country and you have a receipt from them.

    https://www.revenue.ie/en/personal-tax-credits-reliefs-and-exemptions/health-and-age/health-expenses/qualifying-expenses.aspx

Also, as with expenses in Ireland you can only claim the net cost for you (so if a GP abroad charges you 30 euros and you get a 20 euros refund for it because you have private insurance or qualify of a public health insurance refund in that country, you can only claim a 10 euros expense in ireland).
