My friend is from Brazil. At home she has been diagnosed with ADHD. Normally her mam sends over repeat prescriptions for ritalin but her Doctor has retired, She visited a GP in Ireland and he said that Irish GPs could not prescribe Ritalin that it has to come from a psychiatrist. Is this correct? He said even if he prescribed it the pharmacy would refuse it.

My wife gets ritalin and gets a prescription from her psychiatrist, she gets the tablets no problem in the boots on Grafton street so don't know where the doctor got the information that a pharmacy would refuse it. All Boots did was ask my wife afew questions and she had the meds within ten mins.

Just the pharmacy would refuse it because he is not a psychiatrist just a GP.

As far as I know a GP cant write a prescription for it so she would have to go to a psychiatrist to get the prescription written. That's what my wife has to do

Pharmacist here. A GP can't initiate a course of Ritalin only a specialist in behavioural disorders can. The GP can however continue treatment and write monthly prescriptions.

Thanks for that info hound gone wild, I was totally unaware that a GP could continue to write perscriptions, that would be alot more handy for my wife as we were travelling each month to Dublin from Monaghan to see her doctor and spending 120 euro a session to see him (100 per consultation and 20 for the perscription)

Ask for a copy of your latest prescription from your pharmacist, bring it to your GP and see if they're happy to continue it themselves. They may want you to continue to see the specialist every 3-6 months. They may not want to get involved at all, but there's no law preventing them from prescribing it nor a pharmacist from dispensing it as long as a specialist started it.

Thanks so much for that info, it was getting abit expensive for us heading up to Dublin once a month when you factor in getting a bus up, something to eat and a coffee then the consultation and the script followed by the meds,it was costing us about 250 euro a month at least. I will mention all you have said to my wife and we will speak to our GP about it.

    Really appreciate your help :)

Does anyone know of a psychiatrist who specialises in ADHD in Dublin?
The ADHD waiting lists, even privately, are huge (Over 1 year in Blackrock clinic & the girl on the phone to me was really rude) I was quoted €1300 to see a psychiatrist in Blanchardstown which seems ridiculous. Any help on this would be much appreciated.

Would love to know this as well, been trying to get a referral to St Pats from my GP only to be told they don't have anybody that specialises in it. Was told they're reaching out to Dr Stephanie Bourke but if it's a 1 year waiting list that's a bit of a shock.

Edit to clarify: I've been diagnosed since I was a kid, I'm looking to see a consultant to see about being put on medication for it after therapy and other coping methods haven't done much.
