A MOTHER-OF-FOUR on trial for unlawfully obtaining almost €30,000 in one-parent family social welfare payments has claimed her drunken Las Vegas wedding was just “a bit of fun” and she did not know it was legal in Ireland.

How many of these cases have we seen lately?

Makes you wonder the level fraud going on in our 20 billion social welfare bill each year.

To be fair I definitely thought those Vegas chapels were a joke and not actually legally binding or anything. I'd imagine this is a fairly widespread belief.

The court artist recreated the scene well here

I pay 15-20k in tax pa, and go to Wales on holidays.

She gets my tax, and goes to Las Vegas.

Getting married in las vegas is not as simple as popping into one of the chapels.

You need to get a licence from Clark county registar and present this to whoever is performing the ceremony.

I speak from personal experience :)

Respectfully, if you are paying 15 to 20k income tax (?) per year, you have a very good salary and should be able to go further than Wales on holiday. Methinks you are exaggerating.

It's actually very little but the calculation they use for the final figure makes it seem like a large sum of money

    That's bull

You can't just rock into a chapel in vegas and get Legally married.

You need to go to the courthouse and get a licence and then can get married 24 hours later. It's quite clear it's legal.

However I'd imagine you can just rock up and have a fun wedding.

She did the legal one it seems from the paperwork on file.

I remember during Leo's campaign for leader he was cracking down hard on fraud to appeal to the dizens of FG. So of his officials were quick to point out fraud levels were quite low.

Of course she knows this but it's easier to "play" dumb and hope it'll go away.

Yep she knew damn well. And she had been claiming the payment since late 90s so she knew exactly what the rules are. And she's now living with the guy and on a family payment. Her story is bull**** and the whole thing is an insult to genuine single parents imo.
