98 Micra dash going crazy

    Hi,

As the title says - went to the car and the dash was going crazy. Petrol needle is at 0. Speed needle is at the max. Digital odometer is flashing and there is a quick tick tick ticking noise. Car starts fine and all other electrics seem fine. This is happening whether the engine is running or off and with the key out.
Any ideas? Is it something I can fix myself?

    Appreciate any help!

    Hmm, not sure.
I suppose this just happened today and everything was fine before?

Can you disconnect the battery for 10 mins or so?
Do you have a voltmeter to check battery charge levels?

Thanks! Yes it just started happening suddenly. I disconnected the battery but it was the same after I reconnected. Don't have voltmeter but battery seems ok. Car turns over first time. Lights and wipers etc work fine even if the engine isn't running. Something gone wonky with electrics I reckon.

These K11 Micras are fairly bulletproof, but of course anything can happen.
It seems like the electrics to the cluster has gone wonky

You can remove cluster and have a look

Thanks again. So would i be looking for something burnt out?

Look for loose wires, dampness, smells, scorching
Anything that looks out of order really.

Mousey might chew up the wires if it happened suddenly.pull out the clocks and see for signs of a mouse behind it chewing up stuff or flittering papers

The chances are you won't see a thing as it's more than likely a fault in the board itself. It used to happen to the almera of the same era too. Another cluster was the only way around the problem or else get the original cluster repaired.

If going for a secondhand cluster the mileage on the cluster will be from the donor car.

Are you sure there's no ****e on the dash pressing in on the ODO reset button when you start ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,730 ✭✭✭redser7

Thanks both. Nothing pressing on the odo button. I'm going to pick up a second hand cluster tomorrow. Good point about the mileage although I'd say it's days are numbered. Maybe we'll get 1 more year out of her.

Bought a new cluster and sorted the problem. Thanks for the suggestions.

Sound, did you see anything out of the ordinary? How much was the cluster (in case someone else comes looking)?

I couldn't see anything obvious, but then I didn't open it up. I reckon something went on the board. Paid 40 for an 01 cluster at Summerhill Motors. It's knocked about 100 K off the old ODO :) But we'll be the last owners.
