I am thinking of putting my beer and ale in kegs but I don't know how long the beer would last in the keg

Depends what you mean by "last". Beer doesn't suddenly go off, like milk. It also depends on what sort of beer, how you keg and what measures you take to keep the beer fresh. In a properly sealed and pressurised corny with a CO2 blanket, beer can still be great for months, and a strong dark one pretty much indefinitely.
