Looking at weather forecast and how poor growth has been this spring,I’m looking at having all stock out by the 17th of April at the earliest now.
No point in making ****e of the place this is around 2/3 weeks later than normal for here but I’ve enough bales till then so no point in panicking yet.
How is every one else faring out at the moment?

True it's only St Patricks Day yet, when I had cattle I'd always target about the tenth of April and I'd always be a week either side, land is heavy here and unlke dairying it's a big job to bring back in cattle, especially on a fragmented farm.

Lot of lads chanced cattle out before the snow and had to bring back in ourselves included. Took heifers to outfarm but they are in the yard There now...

Judging by the weather and more snow coming, I’d be happy enough if I get cattle out by August at this stage 😡😡😡

The only hope you have is to put them in. You need enough of them to make it worthwhile and you won't have room for enough of them without taking them off the grass for a while.

That said, it still doesn't mean you'll have grass for them when you let them out! Personally, I'm blaming Met Eireann for this weather. I preferred it when they couldn't predict what was going to happen. Now, they're predicting snow and rain all the time, and the hoors are getting it right :eek::eek:

Why can't they predict dry sunny weather???

They'll eat any grass that there is and then there's none for the cattle. Found that out in spring 2013.

A few cows/calves out and wee bull in and out with bulling heifers. 2 yards with autumn calvers in and out. Most still in but stores going out today or tomorrow will walk the field first wed a lot of rain overnight

Planning on putting 16 bullocks out on next Tuesday or Wednesday. These were out for a few days before the snow. The rest will go out before the end of the month. (Except the handful being fattened in the house, they wont see a field of grass again)

Land here won't tolerate poaching or out wintering, no grass till june if I do.
Would love to have the land to leave the sheep out and lie back for the winter...... easy street eh

Will cut silage here around the 10th of may regardless. Lol 😂 be lucky to get some for June this year. Honestly if I get another month of this I'm proper up sh!ts creek.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,123 ✭✭✭Who2

Is it even worth letting them out this year at all?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,225 ✭✭✭charolais0153

The first snow was bearable but this going to add another 2 weeks onto things. Cows dont seem too keen on the bought in silage soi dont knie how long theyll stay on that!

No I haven't, I was only taking the piss saying I'll get it early. It's the first ground that I usually graze and fert. It got slurry all right.

Will probably start May Day but realistically could be later depending on the land. I couldn’t look at it from the road without getting stuck.

Will have to buy bales if I go past April 20th

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 210 ✭✭Angus2018

I've a bunch of cows and calves out at the moment. Had no choice since I ran out of room in the sheds. Everyone else will be staying in for a long time, I've enough silage but I'd worry the tanks underneath could fill to the top before I know it.

I'll let the in-calf heifers out for a week to strengthen their legs before they calve and then rehouse them.

Was just west of Ennis on a farm today. I couldnt believe how little growth there was back there. Fields look yellow and hungry. Farmer I was talking to said it could be May before he will let out cattle.

Dropped two cows to Carnew today. There is no much sign of green up there and I thought we were bad.

Looking at mt c’s long term forecast its May Day before any real heat arrives to kickstart growth.
It will be mayday for a lot of people if that happens it’s going to be a very late spring.

Think it was may before stock were turned out here in 13

Half a kg of nuts, 0.25kg soya and minerals and as much average 73dmd 17% P silage as they could eat. Ya the hex are more or less done. There is a bbx and a frx that are tall but may need to let them go overage as they wont stop growing up. There time is not up until June anyway. Have 7 more to finish before July then 14 more before Christmas as they come fit in two lots of 7 these 21 are still in. This is first year im at full capacity with my own stock but the spring has ****ed things up. Have still 50 odd 75dmd+ 18% P bales so may as well use them up on whats in shed and I have 13 out wintered that will have to stay in mount misery longer. I have 12 light weanlings out around 5 weeks now and turning inside out on grass.☺

Would you not have been better ad-lib feeding for 4 -5 weeks inside ?

They are very dirty off the straw. I could have then they would get even dirtier with as they would have been loose with the feed. Grass is cheap bedding also.

If knifing them it wouldn't make a bit of difference. Also adding straw or Citrus pulp to the diet would dry them up.

Cows and calves that were out and back in are now back out! There was a bit of nature today so we put them in a field with good shelter hopefully they’ll be ok. Giving -5 tonight here but it’s quite mild

They are grand out these days. Was out with bales of silage this morning and none of the cows came to the feeder. All lying over chewing the cud. Most days it's a race to get the net off.

It's amazing even when it's cold, a dry day will have them happy out compared to the last 8 months of wet scuttery weather. Cows consume some feed to keep the same weight on in cold wet weather. I swear this is the dryest period of weather we have had in west galway since last may. It's almost a week with no rain............

They were all grabd so there’s another 16 weanlings in 2 lots out today. If tomorrow is decent then we’ll throw out some more cows with earlier calves

Got 11 month bulls out today

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,164 ✭✭✭blackdog1

Cows out night and day here while the weather holds trying to get last of the silage field grazed and closed. Looks like I'll be cutting 25th off May all things going well. Might have to cut back to once a day grazings if growth doesn't pick up after grazing silage ground .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 210 ✭✭Angus2018

Let out the in calf heifers, not a whole lot for them to eat but they need to get the strength in their legs up and shed some fat before calving. I don't see the weanlings or large bullocks going out for at least 2-4 weeks now.
