Seems.that most modern hobs need a mains supply in order to work, are 100% of them like this now or is there an alternative that will work without the mains?

What do you mean , the gas hob needs main electricity to work?

Probably the sparker that lights the flame.

Even then a match fixes the issue

So what is it, emergency gas shut off? Is there such a thing?

Yes a slam shut valve, they go on the main incomer , but are not a feature of hobs that I've seen.

I think you are correct, it's the sparker, timers , clocks etc but they still operate with a match unless I'm wrong

I'm curious as to why supplying a mains would be a problem, since you have to supply most of the rest of the kitchen with mains supply?

All gas hobs will work on both mains gas and bottled gas. You simply need to change the gas jets. Do get a gas installer.

Well if you lose the mains and have gas, you can still cook, boil water, etc etc, without the rest of the kitchen.

It's a nice option to have.

I get that, but I thought most gas hobs would have an option of using a match or whatnot to light if the electric is out?

I dunno, but ours is only a couple years old and works just fine when the power is down.
Of course need to find a match or a lighter and can't use it to tell time.

Still boils water for a cuppa though

It's gas ovens that depend on mains electricity to work - they have a flame failure device.

Hobs - light it manually and they just work.

In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.

Ah, I read your question differently. I think the OP is just eager to have the option to use the gas if the mains goes out, i.e. supplying mains is not in itself a problem.

Mine doesn't, Hotpoint Gas Hob, FTGHG 641

It states in the spec it has a 1 meter electrical connection on it:confused:

I have a De Dietrich one with elec spark on it, but I can light it with a match during power cut etc.

Sorry folks, that was a typo, my phone changed does -> doesn't. Mine definitely does work without power, provided ya have a match :)

I know about slam shuts, have worked on them before.
I was thinking more of something similar, but built into a hob.

Is there any way around that?
i have a gas cooker, have to say it's very handy if there is an outage....but as (gas) oven is on an electronic timer, I cannot over-ride it to get the gas over on. Thx
