BMW vs Mercedes Coupe

Could anyone help out deciding on the two germans for a coupe? Would most likely be buying from UK as I've found very little choice in Ireland.

Budget is rougly 23k and mainly between the MB E-class Coupe (post 2013 facelift) in AMG Line and a BMW 4 Series M-Sport.

In terms of engines I'm torn between going petrol or diesel. I like the reviness of a petrol but there is something about the mountains of torque from the diesels.

Currently thinking of a E250 CDI/ E200 or then for the BMW 420D (430D at a stretch) / 428i. I do relatively low mileage as I would usually commute to work but then other times would be mostly longer motorway/national road trips coupled with the usualy short weekly shopping jobs. All in all roughly 12k KM yearly.

I understand that the cars are very different in concept with the E being more fo a GT and the 4er apparently being a "drivers" car. I do think that the facelifted E in AMG Line does look a lot more striking, whereas the 4er even in M-Sport is a bit bland in comparison. Inside the E wins hands down in terms of luxury, althought I'd prefer the BMW infotainment.

Head is all over the place, would appreciate any help or maybe even some completely other choices!

    Personally I'd go for a 428i m sport.

But sure test drive them both and see:

    - how each drives, assume BMW drives better
    - interior, which one you prefer, I personally don't like Mercedes interiors
    - exterior, which do you like look of

Definitely don't get a diesel, get the petrol.

You're picking the wrong German Coupé :pac: Although I may be a tad biased.

Although I'll never go back to Diesel again.

One other thing on the Diesel Coupé.

It'd be like designing a bra specifically for Ella Macpherson and then wrapping it around Bet Lynch.

How would one go about test driving the MB, would the dealers not just have the new model for the E class? I guess it comes down to looks vs driving pleasure, won't know till I drive them I guess!

Always have been a huge fan of the TT, it's been the only one, along with the A7 to tickle my fancy from the Audi camp.

You both seem to be against the diesel option. Thinking petrol only for the 4er to match its dynamic drive, on the MB I think the cruising diesel could work better...

    Avatar, what have you done!

After thinking about it more, I am really considering a TT, always wanted one but the lack of usable rear back seats held me back. In terms of price/performance from the reviews a 2011ish TFSI 2.0 in S-Line looks like a great option! Do you have any experience with the back seat utility? Only for a short drive like less than an hour for sub 6ft people. I do usually have the seat quite forward compared to most people :/

Any suggestions on what to look for in them?

You probably know as much about them as I do. The seats are tiny - they're not suitable for anyone other than a child up to about 4 foot 6 inches (there abouts) otherwise they have to squash down or bit or get hit by the boot lid (potentially). But anyone smaller that that and they are fine - if they're not claustrophobic :)

I've the Mk 3 2l petrol quattro S-line and no idea if there are any known issues, have 2 years warranty left, so hopefully nothing much prone after that :)

Bit like you always liked them. I started a thread on here around April/May before I bought.

At 17k km now and it's been a fun (nearly year) - no complaints.

If it was me id be looking at the E350 AMG, far better than any 3 or 4 series bmw unless your going for an M. The e class in general will ve in a different league to the 3 and 4 series in terms of finish and spec.
