Well water issues

    Evening all,

Since the storms and with all the rain and snow we recently had we are currently seeing our well water turning an unfortunate brown color. The issue I've found is ground water leaking into the manhole, filling to above the well liner and then leaking into the liner causing the well water to turn brown.

    My fixes are -
    1. Plaster the inside and outside of the man hole.
    2. Possibly use some sort of water proof sealer internally and externally.
    3. Possibly fill bottom section externally of manhole with concrete to seal the level that's at ground water level.
    4. Use silicone or similar to seal the top of the liner where the rope and pipe go down into the well shaft.

    My questions then are:

    1. Is the only option to 'clean' out the well water to just simply run the water for a period of time.
    2. Does anyone know of a good sterilizer that we could pour into the well to try sterilize the water before we clean it out and start consuming again. Milton has been suggested to me.
    3. Any other suggestions for good sealers to use with the plaster or as an additional sealer on the walls.I'm assuming plaster on its own would not be enough to keep out ground water seepage.

    Thanks everyone.

Pump out the well , put Milton into It, leave it for 24 hours, pump it out again.
Could you put a French drain around the well to carry surface water away

I think the best thing is put in a stone drain to take water away from the well head. Anything else is just a temp fix and water will still leech into the well over extended wet periods.

We did this from my mums well ten years ago and it’s been perfect since.

The advice above on sterilising the well is good. I’d just leave it overnight if you can’t leave it idle for 24hours soaking. You could do it overnight a second night too.

The french drain option wouldn't work I think as the problem is mainly under the ground. I should have mentioned earlier the ground level is about 3ft above the top of the well so the manhole is about 4ft deep and is possible picking up ground water too. We were affected by the recent storms when the rain water flooded the area where the manhole was and simply put it under water. But I think mainly the problem is ground seepage.

When you say 'pump out' Tabby is simply turning on a tap the best bet?
