First check donedeal for what that car might make in a private sale (remember those are asking prices, not actual prices). Then check Toyotas website for deals on the model you want.

I'd say an 08 is worth roughly zero to a main dealer - you would probably get the same price if you paid cash with no trade in, BUT they do have offers: trade-in/trade up, 1500- 3500 depending on the model, and it saves you trying to sell the car privately.

Check out as many makes and cars as you can. Enjoy it. Don't pay full price for anything. Always haggle to get a deal. Buy the car you like the most.
    Most importantly have fun.
There is lots of lovely new cars out there and good deals too.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

What model are you looking to buy?

Keep in mind there is just been a new Auris announced but they’re probably still selling the current one. That makes the Corolla an old model by association.
Production of the Avensis has just stopped for good, so that’s an old model now too.
The RAV4 and Land Cruiser are also on the umpteenth facelift too. Same with the Yaris.

The CH-R is probably the strongest proposition they have.

Toyota CHR, I have a 08 honda civic to trade, low mileage, in very good codition.

I know its not worth much, but if I could get a couple of grand trade in then it would reduce the cash deposit that I will have to put down.

You might consider selling the Civic privately too. Yes there is more hassle but you may get more for it privately than the dealer will offer you for it. Then go in and see what straight deal you can get on the CHR.

If you have 3rd level college near you maybe advertise 08 civic there? Say would have little difficulty anyway selling that car privately.

If I got 3 grand trade in then I would be delighted..

Don't look at the trade in price look at the price to change. A dealer can easily offer you €4k on your Civic if they are €6k more expensive than the dealer offering you nothing as a trade in.

I am getting €2000 scrappage for a 2006 Polo against a new Seat Arona . Is that a good deal?
How do I bargain a dealer otherwise? They seem to fix the price after scrappage.

Shop around. Realistically the Polo is worth next to nothing to the dealer, so your bargaining position isn’t based on the car being something they’d make money on, but you won’t know what deal can be done till you try a few dealers.

Incidentally, Skoda are doing €3500 scrappage on the Karoq. - actually, scratch that, the Karoq is around €10k more to buy - thought they were equivalent cars, Karoq must be more of a Tiguan/Ateca rival.

From looking at the Seat website, it looks like scrappage on an aroma is €1k, so they’ve added €1k to that?

Given it's a recently launched model I'd say you will doing well to get any sort of discount off them outside of the scrappage deal.

It’s a SEAT though. The unironic Skoda. They’ll never sell anything for list price.

Would their dealers have big margin's though?

I honestly don’t know, they wouldn’t be working to tight Dacia-like margins anyway. You’d want to be making something as they’re not exactly a huge seller.

Sell your car through Wilsons or Merlin auctions and haggle a straight deal price.

Main dealers will never keep a 10 year old car - they'll move it on to another trader and want €500 in the deal for themselves.

At auction you get the dealers and private buyers. If the car is low mileage and decent condition, you'll get a good price.

If the distributor is giving the scrappage deal on the basis of having a trade in, that won’t be a runner.

So the dealer has given me a cost price less scrappage of 21,500. I am going to go 50% cash and 50% HP using VW Bank (3 years). 5.9% APR

Any tips to reduce the cost? Should I just say 21000 or no deal?

I’d be checking prices. A 1.0 SE with metallic is €21736 ex works.

If you’re giving €21500 plus your Polo and they’re giving a minimum of €1000 scrappage, then how much are they charging for delivery? €1236?

Here’s a demo Arona SE with metallic for €23k. somebody’s taking the mick with the pricing given that a new one should reasonably cost €22500 max. (Allowing a generous €750 for delivery) Maximum delivery charge on a Volkswagen is €775 like.

It's a bit complex because we have a few add-ons and modifications but the Grand total is 23000, less 1500 scrappage so net cost is 21500.

I guess my real question is whether it's possible to haggle with a large dealer for new cars? I have never bought a new car before. How should I bargain?

HAve you the deal done already?

Thing to do is shop around. Not just ring around. On a newly launched model that I’m assuming is in demand - they’ll probably hold as much margin as possible, but there’s usually one who didn’t get the memo and wants to get the sale at any cost.
