Low Budget PC Purely for Video Editing

Hi All,

Asking on behalf of my father who is looking to get a new PC for video editing. He currently owns a Dell M90 dinosaur from 2007 and its certainly on its last legs!

1. What is your budget? €800 max

2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? Video Editing in 1080p. Nothing groundbreaking and I doubt he will be touching any 4k content.

3. Do you need a copy of Windows? Yes

4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? No

5. Do you need a monitor? No

5a. If yes, what size do you need.

5b. If no, what resolution is your current monitor and do you plan to upgrade in the near future? 2x 1920x1080 monitors

6. Do you need any of these peripherals? No

7. Are you willing to try overclocking? Yes

8. How can you pay? Credit Card

9. When are you purchasing? Within 30 days

10. If you need help building it, where are you based? Would prefer if it could come pre-assembled but I understand this will push up costs. If that's not an option, my brother and I can help him to build it.

Thanks in advance. He has looked around the bricks and mortar shops and seen some he likes but as expected, they cost a little more for what you are getting. I haven't been following the PC building scene for a number of years so have no idea what is currently available out there. Any help or guidance would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks very much for this. Are there additional PCI slots available if he ever wanted to upgrade his RAM down the line? Where does that processor stand in terms of performance nowadays?

There are 4 RAM Slots on that board - he can upgrade the memory.

The processor is decent 4 cores 8 threads which is pretty good, bit slow on clock speed in comparison to Intel but you're looking at a significant jump in cost for anything better (which would ideally be overclocked).

Very solid build IMHO - I probably wouldn't bother with the CPU cooler and would go for a smaller (256GB) SSD if one can be found a bit cheaper.

He said he was willing to overclock and though while not necessary (esp if coming from a 2007 machine!) it does give good gains.

Could save a few quid though by just getting a single 8GB stick for now, 256GB SSD/and a 1 or 2TB HDD. Really depends on his actual usage as to whether he needs 16GB and would make use of the extra SSD/HDD space which obviously drive up the price significantly.

Coming from a 2007 based PC, even best case scenario if it were a top end Core2Quad from that era, this PC will absolutely blow it out of the water and then some without overclocking, with 8GB ram, and a 256GB SSD.

I'd be very dubious on OCing with that board. I really don't like the look of the heatsink. One of GamerNexus' videos recently was quite an eye opener.

Good picks, id probably replace the 2400G with a 1600 for 2 more cores and 4 more threads and use the stock cooler, as its decent for a stock cooler. Then buy the cheapest used PCI Express card you can get your hands on, you can get a used 512MB HD 5450 for €10, shouldn't matter if you don't intend to play games on it.

It's fine for a 4-core CPU.

Coming from a 2007 based PC, even best case scenario if it were a top end Core2Quad from that era, this PC will absolutely blow it out of the water and then some without overclocking, with 8GB ram, and a 256GB SSD.

It's not even worth getting a 256gb ssd over 512. 256 costs about £80, 512 costs £115. Same with HDD's. 1TB costs about £35, 2TB costs £45.

It makes no sense going for the smaller sizes for the minimal savings unless the budget just can't go that far.
