brief thoughts on the 8th amendment

My thoughts (briefly) on repealing the 8th:

If it is repealed, and I don't want an abortion, then it doesn't affect me.

If it is repealed and I am an older man/woman past the time of having kids, it should be none of my business.

Abortion is happening anyway, it just means that it's regulated, safe and cost less to access (possibly). Repealing the 8th will not, in any way, cause some huge boom of abortions. I assume it's a difficult, emotionally crippling experience - not something anyone goes into lightly.

If the foetus is considered a baby from the moment of conception, then why do Irish women keep it a secret until after 12 weeks, in case it "doesn't take"?

If the foetus is a baby from the moment of conception then what happens to all the women who miscarry before 12 weeks - where is the compassionate leave for these women?

I am furious that anyone would expect me to ask permission to have a medical procedure done. Especially that they are suggesting this "period of reflection". No. It's my body how dare you tell me I don't know what I feel and think.

If it is repealed, I want to know what the father's rights are in the situation. It would need to be unanimous, surely?

I don't believe that anyone will abort their pregnancy because they think the child might be disabled - unless it is some sort of profound disability that would mean they have no quality of life.

It's none of our business what anyone else does with their body. We need to stop with the nosey neighbours ****.

I am terrified that if i got pregnant now, some hospital will be too afraid to treat me properly and I will die.

I don't want to see any more women - friends - have to carry their already dead babies for the last trimester, give birth to the baby and then have to bury it. All the while, having people congratulate you on your bump.

I don't want this discussion to be about religion.
I want a logical, honest discussion about the pros and cons of removing the 8th amendment. In order for that to happen, we would have to avoid the "you are murdering children" speech, the "it's all about killing disabled children" speech and the "people will use it as contraception" speech.
    Impersonal, logical, debate.
    Anyone?

My immediate, and very brief, thought was - do we not have a mega thread on this already?

But what about the people who are thinking of voting no just to piss off the people that won’t stop going on about it.

    What would you tell them?

I find engaging in abortion debates to be an exercise in futility. I have my beliefs, others have theirs- and in all my time here reading abortion debates on boards I’ve never once seen any one “side” come around or even briefly loosen their stance. Some people are pro life, some are pro choice, and that’s grand. There is a lot of unnecessary agro and hostility on both sides, I think.

When's this referendum taking place?I think 99% of us have our minds made up and won't be getting changed either way so let's get it over and done with.

I think abortions should be allowed retrospectively.

Agreed, but I wanted to get past all the arguing and religion bashing and stuff.

You wanted a whole thread for your views and a different thread for everyone else’s.

    Very well... ABORTIONS FOR NONE!
    Boooooo!

    *thinking*

Abortions for some, miniature Irish flags for others.

I think I'd tell them it's A) a waste of time and B) it's a waste of your voting rights

I genuinely and honestly do not understand young women voting against abortion . Its not like they will be forced to have one themselves . Everyone can choose not to have an abortion but why should I be choosing for anyone else
I am as the OP an " aul wan " but its just not my business to dictate to young women how to feel or think
