Landlord refusing to return money paid for water charge

I was a resident in a houseshare during the water charges saga. When the time came for the money to be paid we gave the €240 to the landlord. We were reliably informed that the money would be returned to us if the water charge was cancelled.

The landlord collected the money and 3 weeks later the climate changed and it looked like the water charge was going to be cancelled. At around this time I made a phonecall to Irish water and from the limited amount of information I received from Irish water it looked like the water charge had not been paid on the house.

Fastforward until last April and water charges were cancelled.

Fastforward until last September and refunds were supposed to start happening.

Fastforward until last December and I made a phonecall to the landlord looking for my money. Not refunded yet, nothing for you.

Fastforward until today and I made a phonecall to Irish water, information was more forthcoming and no money due to be refunded as no money was ever paid against that property.

Is this a matter for the gardai ? Money solicited under false pretences ?

Witnesses are available to back up my story

This is happening to many people I know. Landlord scum taking advantage of good rent paying folk. He deserves everything he gets.

Definitely go to gards and report him, he is probably not paying tax on the rent either. Let us know how you get on

Do you have proof of payment else it's just a lost cause

Tell him that next month you are paying rent minus the 240 that he extorted from you under the pretence that he was paying the water charge and never did. Tell him you have proof that no water charge was paid on that property.

Usually not a good idea to withhold rent. Especially when you’re dealing with someone like this.
