There used to be a Garda Trafficwatch 1890 205 805 but it no longer seems to be working. Is this service gone or is there another number?

Absolute lunatic on the N11 yesterday but number did not work.

Seems to be working - definitely ringing.

Other than that, call the nearest Garda station. They'll let you know what to do.

It could have been a routing glitch on your network or something like that.

From what I've heard, it's a fairly futile exercise reporting dangerous driving.

If a prosecution were to result, you would have to give an undertaking to appear in court and give evidence.

That might entail driving to a distant location wherever the court was sitting, and be prepared to have your evidence questioned by the offender's defence. All at your own expense. Time off from work etc.

I've reported a few lunatic drivers over the years and never once got a call back or any follow-up from the Gardai. I've come to the conclusion that reporting 'dangerous' driving to the Gardai is a total waste of time and I wouldn't bother doing so any more.

Depends on who was telling you!

Should someone be convicted in your absence based solely on a witness statement?
How do you think courts work here?

I've reported to Trafficwatch and depending on what it is, they usually claim they will arrange to send a nearby car to investigate.
I've also given a statement in a garda station about a parent who allowed their child to be unrestrained. The garda gave the driver a warning and I can confirm that since then, the child always appears to be restrained.
I could have taken it to court but was also given the option of having the driver warned, which I went for.
Anyhow, I don't want a call back or follow up from the Gardai. I've given them a lead. In general, they can follow up on it without the need to keep me briefed on it.

You may well be right with regard to nothing coming of it, but sometimes the driving is so dangerous that if I didn't at least try to do something I would feel I was being negligent.

You never know, there may be a Garda somewhere ahead, and he may keep an eye out for the car described.

    Report

My family and I were nearly wiped out by two fcukwits racing years ago, I only managed to get one reg plate.

It went to court about a year later and fcukwit was put off the road.

    PLEASE REPORT

That's good to hear. So obviously reporting dangerous driving can get a positive result. Did you have to give evidence in court?

    Hi

Yes I attended court on the day. I didn't have to give evidence as the guy pleaded guilty to dangerous driving.

He was probably back on the road within 12 months but at least he got a good lesson and I'm sure his insurance went through the roof as a result of the conviction.
