Funeral costs

    I'm aware that the funeral grant has been done away with. Is there any sort of financial support available to help with funeral costs?

    You can apply to the CWO at your SW office for help with funeral costs.
    You will need the funeral bill and evidence of income of the bereaved family.
    Evidence of income would be payslips and/ SW receipts of adult children and widow/widower.
    May look for bank statements too.
    Will only pay for the very basics too.
    Coffin, opening of grave, crematorium, 1 hearse, no mourning cars no flowers and definitley no refreshments or funeral clothes.

    U can apply under the exceptional needs payment. Each case decided on its merits.

    I heard that funerals can be quite expensive, and the total cost might reach 8-12K. Never thought it could be so expensive to die.

    It’s entirely possible to organize a funeral for a fraction of that amount, just the same as it’s possible to organize a wedding for quite little. The more frills you add the more expensive it becomes.

    There is financial help to cover the costs (of the funeral not the wedding) but it is stringently means tested, quite rightly, and the help will only partially cover a very simple funeral if any help at all is forthcoming.

    Speak to your local credit union, if you have an account there, about any help they might have regarding the funeral arrangements of deceased members.
