Is there any heater on the market that would run on a 5kg or 7kg bottle gas cylinder instead of the standard 11.34kg cylinder which is a no no for an
    elderly person to use.

What about an electric oil-filled heater instead, or are they worried about power cuts?

    Power cuts

Could a smaller cylinder be used in a standard heater but with a longer regulator hose I wonder?

The problem is availability of smaller gas bottles. Everywhere has the 11.34kg ones but I think the smaller ones are a bit rare? The smaller ones should however fit OK. Just check they take the jumbo regulator.

Check out the heaters in some of the local builders merchants like Morris's (Waterford) and Woodies as I'm sure I've seen a gas heater that takes smaller bottles as standard - remember thinking it was a daft idea as I thought the gas would't last that long.

    Would this be too small?

I had one for tenting a few years back and found it ideal.

thanks for suggestions, does anyone know if the standard 11.34kg bottle or its regulator have any gauge on it to let you know how much gas is left.

I used a small Calor Gas for Camping for years. It also took the standard regulator which is used on the 11kg bottles.
Try phoning Calor Gas direct explain your problem and I'm sure they will have a solution and help.

Unfortunately there is no gauge on the regulator or cylinder. A 11.34kg bottle will run for about 110 hours with 1 panel lit, 55 hours with 2 panels lit or 37 hours with 3 panels lit. Running the heater 8 hours a day with 2 panels lit would last a full week.

Another option would be to get a wick paraffin heater, which is a lot lighter to carry and refill than a gas heater. These do not require electricity either and radiate heat much like a gas heater. The heat output is between 2.2kW and 3kW depending on the model, roughly the heat output of a gas heater with two panels lit.

The paraffin is typically sold in 4 litre bottles at hardware stores, which fills the heater's fuel tank to the brim. A 4 litre bottle of paraffin weighs under 4kg. For comparison, a full 11.34kg cylinder weighs almost 25kg as the metal bottle accounts for over half the weight.

I've seen paraffin heaters in the TopLine hardware store, but can't remember off hand the price. This is the heater on their website. From a quick search online, McLoughlin's (based in Co. Kildare) sells several models online, the cheapest one with a 2.2kW rating for €160 (link).

Paraffin heaters even the modern ones do give off a peculiar smell that does permeate the room after a while.
