Job Titles that don't say anything

Every day I hear different people describing their chosen profession, and increasingly I've noticed most don't really say anything at all

    "I run my own business"

    "In finance"

    "Part time model"

Is it out of embarrassment these people try to be as vague as possible, or is it cuteness?

It's easier to start off by being vague and let whoever's asking ask follow up questions. Sometimes they're not asking because they actually care and they really don't want you to launch into an explanation of your TPS reports

Maybe they would prefer you to mind your own business?

I know when I'm out I have zero interest in talking about my work, nothing worse than some numpty who won't take the hint and keeps asking follow up questions about it.

Sometimes it's easier to give a vague description if people wouldn't recognise your job title.

I'm a medical scientist. No one knows what that is. So I say I work in a hospital lab.

    "Project Engineer".

To be fair, that's a job title in a lot of engineering companies.

I just say "engineer" when anyone asks me what I do. I never studied as an engineer and to give an explanation of what I do would require more than anyone wants to hear. So 'engineer' keeps everyone happy.

I just say I have a Chandler Bing job. That's much easier than explaining what I do.

    This happens in my place,
all the staff are called account managers and I thought when joining there was multiple managers however I quickly learn they just look after different individuals segments and are not managers at all, not even team leaders .

It's normally a made up position to give someone a token promotion.

Basically. Usually a step up from graduate. When you're at that stage, you probably feel like it's a more important sounding role because you've been a graduate. And most engineers work on projects all the time so the 'project' part is nonsense. But I get why a 'Project Engineer' would say they are one.

When questioned by someone who needs to mind their own business..
    Q:How many people work here?
    A:About half of them..

No problem at all. Except you could be anything from a a washing-machine repair person to a rocket scientist.

When I was in my 20s, you gave that answer and people assumed that you did data entry if you are female, or a network engineer if you are male.

Nowadays, most of the dumbest bears know it means nothing at all. (Still a few who don't, old-skool ones ....)
