What now for hopper fed coal boilers?

We have an auger fed coal boiler in the garage. It runs on bituminous singles and heats 200 m2 toasty 24/7 from Oct to May with a seasonal average consumption of just over 1kg/hr.
Obviously the clock is ticking and I'm kinda sick of the soot.
There does not appear to be a smokeless fuel of the 'singles' size and pea anthracite is not to be found either.
Pea is probably a bit on the small size as it does tend to hang in the hopper.
Anybody have a clever plan ?
Has anyone converted these animals to wood pellets even if it means chucking a freshly opened bag every so often?
