Hi all, I've just noticed rte news now is showing when I select rte one. It gives the rte one epg but is displaying rte news now, I've tried a rescan but it's still the same. Rte news now is also showing on its own channel, I'm using an Edison OS 3, and all others channels are fine, getting my reception from woodcock hill. Anyone else having this issue?

Due to the snow issues rte news now is being broadcasted on Rte1. Rte news now is currently showing Tubridy Show, something it wouldn't normally do.

    It brings in easy viewership.
It also gives people news updates on the side and bottom banners of the screen.

Many people wouldn't be aware of news now channel.

I use it on saorview, but understand it's not available on Sat so not everyone would have access to it

With News Now showing on both News Now and RTE1 channels, is the RTE 1 content broadcast on another channel?

For instance Dr. Phil was due to be shown on RTe 1 as I write this.

I do notice a difference though ...... RTE1 are showing the usual ads which are not shown on News Now.

It's pure idiotic doing this, the only people who would not have the RTE News channel already are those who only have the analogue Virgin Media channels.

RTÉ News Now channel should be available for those digital satellite viewers in the following ways:

SKY Ireland Channel 578 (requires active Sky Ireland subscription as signal is encrypted)
    Saorsat Channel No: 3

Also available on other platforms such as:

    Saorview Channel No: 21
Virgin Media Ireland Channel No: 200

As far as I recall RTÉ has not been permitted to carry any commercial advertising on certain tv & radio services which includes the RTÉ News Now channel which has hampered it from further development or major enhancements particularly in the area of live programming output due to a complete lack of revenue which has made it an unfeasible service to support hence the constant repeats and loops etc; The reasoning behind RTÉ not being allowed to run adverts on it's newer digital TV+Radio stations was probably because the independent commercial sector objected to RTÉ soaking up any more advertising revenue as they already collect the bulk of TV Licence Fee revenue and are dual funded on their main RTÉ TV & RTÉ Radio channels.

Other RTÉ channels restricted from carrying any commercial advertising include tv channel: rté junior along with the RTÉ digital radio channels RTÉ Radio 1 Extra, RTÉ 2XM, RTÉ Pulse, RTÉ junior radio/RTÉ Chill and RTÉ Gold.

Probably part of RTÉ's public service broadcasting remit when you have the vast majority of population affected by a status red weather alert- the highest possible alert on the scale. They need to ensure that essential information is given similar prominence to other major events like a major tragedy, national election etc; If other broadcasters like BBC News, Sky News were covering it but RTÉ was still sticking to normal programming such as Dr. Phil, Shortland Street... on it's primary Channel, RTÉ One serious questions would be asked of their use of public resources. RTÉ News Now channel alone would not have the same audience reach I suspect with some cohorts of the population.

It's no different than BBC1 covering major events and simulcasting main bulletins such as Breakfast etc

You forgot Eir & Vodafone as it's included on all TV services in the Republic of Ireland.

    Eir Channel No: 500

Vodafone TV No: ???? (I can't find info on this one)

They also are restricted from carrying advertising on RTE 2 when showing children's programmes.

RTE have four TV channels - two in HD. They are only permitted to carry adverts on RTE 1, RTE 1+1 which broadcasts from 7pm to 1 am, RTE 2 fom 5 pm to late. RTE 1+1 gets next to no audience and therefore little ad revenue (if any).

RTE pay two third of the cost of running the DVB system while owning it. It is all skewed away from the national broadcaster.

Dr Phil will cope just fine with not being on for a few days.

They can and do advertise during TRTE which is on from 7.15am to 8.45am and 12.50 pm to 5pm weekdays . I do agree with you they are heavily restricted which is severely hampering them
