I've never really looked at these until tonight. Someone pointed out that for a set of returns in Cloonbur DED, Co Galway, p2 says Division = Connemara.

For other returns I've looked at in that area, the fields that are filled on p2 are: County, PLU, DED, Barony, Parish, Townland. But I haven't found others in the area that have fill-ins for: Borough, Division, Urban District. The exception is a set in Cloonbur DED, including the townland of Cloughbrack Upper.

This is one example of one that has Division = Connemara: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai002428644/

Would this be a case of an overzealous enumerator? In this case it's Constable Patk Breheny. Would he have been from "up the country" and see everything in West Galway as being Connemara? ... and thought he needed to put something in that field.

Were the Division field filled in other rural areas? I thought Borough, Division and Urban District would only apply to urban areas.

It seems to be Parliamentary Division - I've a map showing these online from c1906

edit : link will not work for some reason - look for the 'Parliamentary Divisions and Boroughs' map in the Philips Administative Atlas of Ireland on swilson.info.

as far as I can see the link issue is due to a redirect system called skimresources/redirectingat.com used in boards.ie code. when I block the js from that site the link works ok.

location of Cloghbrack Upper townland (placename db)

I had a quick some of the forms I have and the division section is filled in for city, suburban and rural areas.

The Burough section would only be relevant to towns.

    .

It is interesting that the two constituencies in the Queen's County are Ossory and Leix.

had not spotted that - most of the others are just county name and north south, east etc - the only other exceptions seem to be Tullamore and Birr for King's Co. and Connemara for Co. Galway.
