Wedding gift with an Irish twist

    Hi all,

So I'm attending a wedding in a couple of months in India. Myself and my husband met the guy while we were travelling in Australia, hit it off, kept in touch and he flew to Ireland for our wedding last year. He gave us a solid gold coin from Australia to remind us of our time there, beautifully presented.

So the question is - is there anything uniquely Irish that would make a good wedding gift?

He loves all things Irish, when he visited here last year, he fell in love with the place, really felt a special connection with Ireland. We haven't met the wife to be, so as guests of the groom I guess we are more aiming the gift at him?

It has to be able to be in our suitcases and make the trip to India and then for him to bring it to Australia after. We are happy to spend around the 500 euro mark (the less the better obviously but want something really nice).

I just cant find something that hits the mark for us so any suggestions are very welcome!

    Thanks! :D

What about a nice portrait of an Irish landmark he may have visited while over here?

I can get you a sod of turf for €500.

My first thoughts are that that value for a wedding gift for someone with the relationship ye have seems very generous. Very. But to each their own.

Maybe some quintessential Irish clothing, such as maybe a tweed hat or other clothing from Avoca or the likes.

I like the idea of a picture from somewhere he visited, maybe put it in a bog oak frame to add to the Irish sense of the gift.

You could have a look here for ideas. They would ship directly to Australia. https://www.waterford.co.uk/home-and-gifts/gifts-for/weddings

There's a craft lady in Sligo called "Marshall Made It" , now its no solid gold coin and nowhere near your 500 mark - less than 50 i would think! But she makes deep framed images using driftwood from irish beaches and pebbles (not from beaches cos that's not allowed but they are irish) you can get them personalised to say anything. I'm not sure if she has a website but she def has a fb page :-) then give the rest in money lol..

May be difficult to import those into Australia.

I was merely trying to offload a sod of turf for €500. Thanks for pointing out the flaw in my plan. :(

You are right though, anything with potential biological content will not get in.

That is extremely generous and good of you both.

Would you get art or a photograph over safely or ship it?

You could go to Merrion Square or a local artist?

What about a beautiful photograph from somewhere like Giles Norman?

Or a hamper made up from Avoca or any of the above suggestions? There are beautiful throws by Foxford?

Return the sentiment and get one of the limited edition coins from central bank?

    Hi guys

Thanks for the ideas - I know its expensive I would certainly not spend this much money normally (100 quid in a card is more than enough!) but this is sort of a special friend - when we first visited him in India he paid for all of our accommodation and brought us everywhere and paid for everything (refused to take money and he is not rich!) and then spent a huge amount of money on our gift so we want to show our appreciation and return the generosity! Plus he's just the sweetest guy in the world he deserves it.

I think food and anything soil related will be out as we will be bringing them to India with the idea that he's bringing them to Oz and I cant imagine his wife will be too happy when they arrive to Oz and end up on border patrol hahaha! I'll have a look at the prints cheers!

Taking this in to account, maybe a voucher for a flight to or stay in Ireland at a later day would be nice way to help ye meet again?

On the painting front. The Green Gallery in Dublin (top floor Stephens Green) has both prints and also originals, some of which might be in your price range.
Peter Knuttel for example has a nice range of scenic Irish paintings.
