No rebate due... Can somebody in the know have a look please

Hi,
Thanks in advance for any help or light that can be shed on my situation.

I applied for a rebate last week and today was told there was none due. The agent did point out a discrepancy between 2 amounts on my p60 that may have caused an issue with the calculation. She sent the following

Hi Xxxxx,


Can you please confirm with your Payroll Department why your PAYE and USC were calculated on different amounts.

34,177.29 was calculated for PAYE
23,130.17 was calculated for USC


If there is a revision on these amounts, there is a possible rebate.

Could there be a legitimate reason for this or is it definitely an error?

Again, thanks for any information.... Waiting on payroll getting back isn't usually a hastey process.

Are you making maintenance payments to a former spouse? If legally enforceable, the payments are deducted in computing how much of your income is charged USC (see about halfway down this page).

These type of payments should also reduce the amount of income subject to PAYE (although this doesn't appear to have been done in this instance)- see this page.

No, that doesn't seem to be my issue either. There's no payment, legal or otherwise that I can think of which would have been or have been deducted.
It's very confusing.

Any income on your P60 which may fall under any of these USC exempt categories?

Nope. There doesn't look to be anything relevant to me in there either.
