Are there any consequences for an employer issuing a P60 late to an employee? From what I have read they should be issued in the first 6 weeks of the year but I can't find any info on what happens if they are issued late consistently.

Revenue are more interested in the Employer filing the P35 in time and they have the power to penalise them if the P35 is filed late. (as you probably know, the P35 contains all of the info required to complete the P60.)

But, as your employer's tax affairs are confidential between themselves and the Revenue, they probably won't - and shouldn't - tell you the status of the P35.

    Citizens Information states that ....
If your employer does not give you a P60 at the end of each year you should contact your tax office. Revenue can contact your employer to obtain your P60 for you. Only an employer can issue a P60. It can be provided to you either in electronic format or in hard copy. However, Revenue can provide you with details of the pay and tax for the year in question as returned by your employer, which Revenue has on file. [This appears to assume that the employer has filed the P35]

If you contact Revenue to complain about not getting your P60, they'll check whether the P35 has been filed and if not they'll chase the employer about that. They should also contact your employer and instruct them to issue P60s to all employees. There doesn't appear to be any punishment for employers who consistently issue them late. However, if you feel strongly enough about it and are fed up having to wait for the P60 every year, you could consider contacting Workplace Relations to see if you could file a complaint.

Incidentally, this appears to be the last year for which P60s will be issued!

After 1 Jan 2019, Revenue's re-designed all-singing all-dancing PAYE system will come into effect, meaning that employees will have access to their pay and tax record online which will be updated throughout the year as they are paid.

According to Revenue, PAYE Modernisation will involve an “Employer Submission” to Revenue each time an employee is paid. The Employer Submission will contain information similar to that which currently appears on an employer’s P35 return.

    We shall see!
